Deliver a concession speech.

Roughly, NO won 51% to 49%.

Summary for those unaware: In Venezuela, millions of people turned out to vote Sunday in a controversial referendum that, if approved, would fundamentally alter the country's political and economic model and give President Hugo Chavez broad new powers. One of the provisions would allow Chavez to run for reelection indefinitely.

As of right now, that whiznews link says he lost, the Reuters link says he won.

Huh, this link http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/ … 1220071203 says he conceded defeat.  Probably just put the wrong link.

And therein my friends lies the proof that Venezuela is a democracy. Now shut your cakeholes with the dictator crap and let him get on with his job under the ORIGINAL constitution. Unbelievably close call though.

Heh... looks to me like he just wants to get out quietly, before anyone tries to kill him. He wants to be seen as a hero, and therefore acts like one for now...
He's smart enough, because he's not getting out too late...

Hang on a minute...

...if he was a dictator wouldn't he just rig this election or simply steamroll his political opponents out of the way? I wonder if all the Chavez-bashers will be crying about this election being fixed? It only seems to be rigged when Chavez wins.

I'd put money with you that he won't. You really can't understand that it is possible for someone to run a democracy outside of the west? His whole platform of 'legitimate voicebox for the oppressed masses against western exploitation' would be destroyed in a flash if he were to act contrary to the majority will of his own people. Sheesh.

my cousin voted no.

But I doubt this is the last we are going to hear about this issue.  Whats to keep Chavez from introducing this referendum again in the future when the political climate allows.

People think that Chavez is loved and revered by all venezuelans.  Couldnt be farther from the truth.   A huge number, particularly the students,  cant wait till he leaves office.  Only problem is, Chavez's opposition isnt united.

Not to defend the Chavez, but students, in all countries, generally always hate who ever is in office.

Unfortunately for them though democracy involves the majority rule, which for the forseeable future is Chavez all the way. That's what happens when a long chain of successive oligarchies and country clubbers allow an absolutely vast underclass of impoverished folk to develop in a country.

Chavez appeal is to the "lower" class in Venezuela and the military.  But,  Venezuela has always had a pretty decent economy and a strong middle class.  Chavez's anti-us rhetoric is just capitalizing on what has always been there.  As far as I know, people in latin american countries have always had a disdain for the States.  Oh well.  I think its funny h ow the media likes to play it out like hes the next Castro/Somoza/Bautista/Ortega all rolled into one.  He also helps get people in other latin american countries elected as president, like Ortega in Nicaragua and that other dude in Bolivia.

ive always had issue with the term "3rd world"  its a relic from the cold war that has nothing to do with a nation's economic strength.  1st world being the United States and our friends, 2nd World being the USSR and their camp and 3rd simply being other.  I went to Venezuela in the 80's. There was no shortage of rich people or affluent neighborhoods.
