I had a corrupt file notification popping up from the right side of my task bar for the last couple days, so i decided to do run CHKDSK to fix the problem.   Now my PC acts like it's going to boot up but after the windows loading screen finishes, it goes to black screen with the error message:

lsass.exe - Unable to Locate Component
This Application has failed to start because DNSAPI.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem.

The mouse pointer still shows and moves, but if you click "OK" on the error message, it just sits at the black screen.

Any ideas?

Explorer running?
Just an idea but maybe you could manually start explorer.exe from the task manager.

Good news, its a Windows DLL, so you can use Recovery Console or copy it from another Windows.

Throw your Windows CD in and boot to it. But first check if you can boot to Safe Mode (mash F8 on startup) and copy it off the CD.

Alternatively if you have a second desktop, mount your hard drive in that and copy it locally from the working Windows.

It wont start up in safe mode or with the CD in.  It just keeps showing the same error message.

make your cd the first bootable device in the bios... then repair your OS on your hard drive from the cd...

yeah, i probably could boot to the CD but I can't find it.

I thought i was using it but it was some random Windows XP add-on CD or something.

I put the XP CD in a "safe" location where i wont lose it 3 years ago.....just have to remember where that was...shit.

Boot from CD and repair... That should work well enough... I think it's F2 on startup or something

OK, so I'm digging up my 3 month old thread because my PC still isn't working....Been busy with life, like buying a house and having a baby.   So I haven't touched it for over 2 months till tonight.

My baby is finally coming out of his 24/7 100% attention stage so I get some time to myself again and I'd like to get my PC up and going because a laptop as a primary computer sucks and I really want to play some BF2.

I now have a windows XP CD but i can't get the damn computer to boot from it.   I went into BIOS and set ALL the boot devices to CDROM and I'm mashing F2 on startup but the fucker insists on trying to boot from the HDD's so i keep getting the error message.

Any other idea's?

Depending on your BIOS....try F12, F8 or F10.  Can you tell us something about your PC?  Make, etc?

I don't know why but it's now booting from the CD but that just spawned a new problem.

I get to the windows XP install screen and I press "R" to do the repair install but then it just opens a new screen that says something along the lines of "No hard disk was found on your system, Windows XP has failed to install, press "ENTER" to restart"

I know the hard drives are working because on start up they show status as "Normal" and "Bootable".

wtf is going on?

do you have a sata drive?  if you're using an older windows CD, you need to have drivers for your hard drive controller.  when you first boot up with the cd, it will say something like "press f6 to load third-party drivers" or some shit.  if you have your driver on a floppy (they are small) you can then continue with the repair...

Yes they are sata drives.  I have a floppy disc that says "SATA driver disk".     I presses F6 then was prompted to "insert driver into drive A", i put it into the drive and it just keeps repeating "Insert driver into drive *A*"

make sure you load it.  it should find the driver, and then you hit enter to load it.  if it isn't giving you any choices, then you might not have the right drivers.  make sure you have the right .inf and .sys files on the floppy.

I'm at my parents because they have a computer with a floppy drive:  I tried to see what was on the disk but my parents computer says it needs to be reformatted and the floppy disk will lose all information if i do that.

So without this disk working is there any way I can get these drives working?
