This sort of plays off that "Truth about Vista" thread...

I'm building a new computer and I want to know if Vista is really that bad. I have completely legal copies of Windows XP Pro x64 and Vista x64 (courtesy of the School of Engineering here at my university), so either one is available for me.

I was leaning towards Vista, to try it out and because it is newer, but if there are so many problems with it and compatibility issues, is it even worth it? Or should I just go with XP again?

How does Vista handle games like BF2 and CoD4? I know BF2 will lag a little bit, but is the lag really that bad or even noticeable?

I know many of you will tell me to just try Vista out and if I don't like it I can switch, but I really don't want to waste my time formatting and installing the OS and all the programs, only to do it over again.

Hi

Windows Vista is great! You won't regret upgrading. I play Battlefield2, Call of Duty 4 etc all fine on this system with Windows Vista! It's very nice looking, a bit safer and generally it has fixed a whole raft of problems XP had. Make the move, you won't regret it!

OK i have Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit, and its frickin awesome, apart from using 1 of my 4GB i dont care, it plays games no problem, installs the updates and i havnt needed to install any anti virus or anything, it does it all itself!!! Its like a self-sufficient little package. I have not any compatabiliy issues yet and yes performace dips a little, but if you play dx10 games like me you wont care

My advice to you is..GET IT!!

I saw another thread about iTunes on Vista 64, so I was worried other programs might have those same kinds of issues

Also, I will only have 2 gigs of RAM, which is enough right?, but I still want to be able to breeze through load times (I currently have 2 gigs, but they're slow RAM and my system is old so I get to hear the entire loop of BF2 music for every frickin map before I can play!)

I don't get it why these ppl complain about Vista... Mine is almost as fast as XP and even boots faster... but I do recommend having 4gb for vista.
No problems here... Of course new OS is always little bit slower than before. It's like everyone complained about XP and said "98 FTW"...
But there is nothing wrong about the Vista performance. If there is take a look at your pc before saying Vista is slow.

I have Vista Ultimate x64.

If you've got a new PC, go for Vista.
What I love about it is that it automatically finds drivers for almost anything I plug in!
e.g. I was browsing through the Canon website to get the 64bit drivers and jus tcouldn't find the correct ones (because their site and software support blows). I then just plugged the printer in and after a minute I had it fully working with out doing anything my self!

It eats quite a bit of recourses though, so if you're on an oldish system you might not get the best experience.
BTW, I've never had a bluescreen on Vista so don't worry about that.

If you actually have used Vista, you will know half of the 'complaints' are absolutely fabricated bullshit. Most people who 'hate Vista' have never actually used it, and are either misinformed or following the crowd.

From experience:

I had Battlefield 2 running fine on a test machine:
AMD Athlon X2 3600+
2GB DDR2
Onboard 6100

: Do not put Vista on a Pentium Dual Core, they just hate it. AMD X2 or Core 2 Duo E4 minimum.
: 1GB runs happily, 2GB for laptop bloat
: +1GB for games
: UAC isn't as annoying as it sounds - only when you try to access a Control Panel or install something, even so YOU CAN FUCKING DISABLE IT
: Crashes - huh?

The issue with 64bit vista running itunes is correct, there is no support for it..as of now anyways.  I run Vista on my laptop. core 2 duo 2.0ghz 2GbDDR2 667, 120Gb7200rpm, Geforce8600w/256Mb intergrated and it hadles bf2 with everything high and 4x aa at 1024x768.  I like Vista to a point,  I hate how they changed some major things that has been uniformed for awhile in windows.  So from a Tech Support side, it can be a pain in the ass at times,  you can be the administrator but you still need to run programs as the administrator...I know it sounds stupid, its for security reasons, but it does get old.

So end the end, I would say it all depends on your current setup, if your rig is not high end then your Vista experience may suffer

adding to the above. If you only have 2GB ram, stick to 32bit edition, because it tends to be slightly less resource hungry and has next to no compatibility issues

Disable all the eyecandy, and you'll only get a few hangups per game in BF2.
I've been using it on my PC for over a month now, and it runs quite fine.

I don't get any hangups with Vista 64 in BF2. I've been running it for a while now and I'm glad I made the change.

Might add to this (and I don't have complaints about Vista) that I never had a problem running iTunes under my x64 edition of Windows Vista Ultimate.

I love vista. For graphical design, new gen gaming, and getting more out of your computer, it's perfect. It's Microsoft growing up, and being less patronizing by giving us something that not only looks good, but is simple enough to not require some doggy or paper clip instructing you on what to do.
It's compatible with everything I use, and works on my 2.5 year old, crappy laptop.

I would definitely recommend Vista to anyone who has at least a gig of RAM.

PS: Games run great on this thing!

Like others, I use Vista Home Premium 64bit and no problem whatsoever. I have to admit though, it does take quite alot of your RAM. I would advice to have at least 2GB.

Not necessarily - on my 1GB RAM laptop, it uses only 512MB of RAM... It was designed with minimum requirements of 512MB of RAM total...

Im  on Vista and overall its pretty good.

However - you get like 3 dialogue boxes just for making a new folder and everything needs your special permission.

Also, theyve made it soo fucking hard to move your documents folder to an external hard drive. It is actually driving me insane, and im no pc nub. Its all to do with their use of virtual folders / NTFS junction points....

Its taken 3 reformats so far, and im going for a forth and final tonight.

I kinda love it and hate it. meh.

Thanks for all your replies, everyone! I really appreciate it!

Looks like I'll definitely be using Vista. Although I'll start off with only 2 Gigs (which should be more than enough), I'm going to add 2 more after Christmas and my birthday roll around since I'll have some more spending money, then things will really be nice.

And I suppose if by some strange happening my Vista experience sucks badly, I've still got the ability to switch back to XP no problem.
