Music Piracy - as bad as the media portrays?

It's all over the media: Music piracy is illegal, and detrimental to the economy. Don't pirate, or you will pay in either fines or jail time. But is it really as bad as they say it is? Does it affect the labels, the artists, or music stores? Who loses here, if anyone at all, and how much of a problem is piracy nowadays?

What do you guys think?

I really don't think it's a problem (at it's current amount).

Artists and record companies make enough money from other sources anyway (like adverts, films etc) to a point where people downloading their music doesn't effect their income a noticeable amount.

On topic, what really annoys me is some rapper getting paid millions for very debatable 'talent' - How yelling incomprehensible words down a microphone constitutes as talent I will never understand.

If anything the producers who actually make the music should get the majority of the takings - that's where the real talent is.

So in summery, I believe it's not bad, at all.

But doesn't the decrease of sales in singles change the music charts completely? And wouldn't this affect pop artists?

I just don't see how those affects are even measured. Someone stealing something does not mean they would normally buy it.

But what about rock bands? Don't they deserve your support, if you like them? Or, for that matter, any music you listen to. If you like the band, why not buy their stuff? They don't make any profit (or very little profit) on advertising, and if they do, they're usually cast out as sell-outs, for keeping afloat.
How will non-popular music gain support?

Well usually if you really like the band you go out and buy the CD ( most of the time music quality is better and you get addons on that aswell ) + concerts count aswell. and ofc marketing like clothing

Considering Nickelback are really repetitive, I'd almost have to say yes

I was just wondering what the opinion on these forums is.

Should music piracy be legalized? I mean, after all, there's no real way to stop it - any encryption will be cracked, and no one can ever catch all the pirates.

On a serious note, piracy isnt all that detremental to the economy. I mean artist make money from concerts and band t-shirts, and DVDs, ect.

Hmmm... Now let me take a different stance on this matter:
My uncle works for the Swiss Copyright company, and argues that downloading music illegally actually forces people to improve their standards of music production.

This can be explained by the following:
Bob listens to the radio and hears a song he likes. He loves hearing this song, so he goes and buys the respective artist's album. Little does he know, the music on the album has nowhere near the standard that one hit single has. He hates the album, and only ever listens to that one song, while wishing he had not wasted that money.
Next time he hears a hit single on the radio, he just downloads it off of limewire, and spares himself the crappy album.

It will make pop producers increase their efforts in a single album (unlike the 1-day-albums some of them release now), which should filter the radio of any true crap.

Furthermore, rock artists still keep their sales, even with piracy, as they tend to produce good albums on average (ie spend up to 2 years on an album, or more)

What do you guys think?

Well ive never bought a CD in my life, to tell you the truth.
But i think artists deffinetly get ripped off, pretty bad, but thats just part of the music industry now days, and you have to accept that if you wanna make music.

The RIAA and MPAA are just in it for the money, they know that they make enough money from sales and the money they lose from pirates is a tiny fraction of their income. They are just idiots who want to sue kids to try to make a failed point that will never suceed in stopping piracy. Ever. Pirates win, no other option.

Considering a large number of the public tend to buy the albums either form a shop, or from iTunes these days, I think they outweight the suprisingly small lot that pirate, let's face it, only the people who know what torrent's and the other means are profit from piracy, limewire doesn't count

Jimmany Cricket, your own personal conscience, tells you stealing music is bad. If you like the music then buy it, if you want to listen to it but not purchase it use services like last.fm and shock horror the radio. I know a lot of radio is garbage but some internet radios are pretty good.

Downloading music of the internet for free means that the groups are put under more financial presure and may make them more likely to spit or stop making music. Although this is not so much the case in established bands for gods sake, buy small bands songs, dont search the internet ages to find it.

Plus a CD is nice to have, they look pretty and take up space on your bookshelf. Im fairly sure the amount of terrorism they produce is limited but you never know, mabey 9/11 was the result of you downloading films of the net.

I pirate games sometimes, not so much recently though. All the games I pirate I would not have bought in the first place. Games like Blue-Shift, Max Payne, Command and Conquer Generals, Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault and Oblivion. They were games that I was not bought for whatever reason and after pirating them, I payed full price for their squels and expansion packs

Funny thing is, I calculated the actual percentage of the market that piracy makes up - I calculated it for Switzerland only - and I got that piracy makes up an eleventh of the market. Now that may seem like a lot, but if you take into account that only maybe 1/10 would have bought that music anyways, it's less than 1%.
So why does the RIAA care about that small percentage? Do they honestly care about that 1%?

I am happy to pirate music from popular artists who have more money than the know what to do with, (or don't because they've already spent it.) However I will ALWAYS buy music from artists who are unreckognised. Andy McKee for instance, I sent away or one of his CDs instead of taking the much easier, faster and cheaper option of just downloading his music.
