I keep seeing people making comments about another American Civil War. What would each warring side be fighting for?

I don't necessarily agree with the thought...just seeing if the crowd here can go more than one layer deep and examine what issues in the US could be so substantive as to warrant a conflict amongst the population.

Historically Americans tend to unite when faced with a common clear threat. Recently we have spent so much time being divisive with our views that we have become complacent as to where are strength is. For the most part we all have the same goals (Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness), we just have different ideas regarding the paths to achieve them.

A revolution perhaps, but no civil war.

but no matter how we "unite", when American troops get sent to a war/conflict/police action etc... there are ALWAYS the beat nicks that bitch and protest the war/conflict/police action etc... no matter if it's justified or not. I personally do not agree with how long this shit in the Middle East has gone on, as well as some of the shit that has gone on, But I will ALWAYS support the troops, (except the idiots doing illegal/immoral things).

What the hell are you talking about?

And more importantly, why do you think the Iraq war is the war to end all wars?

the poor outnumber the rich 9 to 1
how many rich people have garages and basements full of weapons looking for an excuse to use them?
how many rich are willing to fight?

anywho

maybe not a civil war, maybe just an overthrow of government, i.e. revolution

The two most vocal parties in American politics are the Religious right, who still insist that the Earth is 6000 years old, and the War protesters who have nothing better to do with their lives than criticize everything the government does, thats what I'm saying.

Now, the vast majority of Americans fall well in the middle of the two (or don't care either way) so I doubt a war is imminent...

And as for the Iraq war, I'm simply saying that for every war since WWII, there has been a small but extremely loud group of people who always think they have the answer, but are never able to produce it when asked, be it in Vietnam, Yugoslavia, or Iraq...

West vs. east, and not necessarily rich vs. poor or atheism vs. religion. Additionally, you likely wouldn't see many open fields of battle, and while the military is busy restructuring its command structure, to avoid circumstances when men are ordered to bomb their own homes, every politician of importance would be targeted for assassination by one side or the other. Security at federal facilities would have to shoot through the roof to avoid waves of "Oklahoma city bombings."

Not all of them, buddy. Go out and talk to a few. You'll find a couple earnest young Earthers, but the rest will probably laugh their ass off if asked. Of course, it depends on where you survey.

From the outside, it seems there is a big rift between the left and the right. There doesn't seem to be much of a middle ground over there. Although, I know at the end of the day they won't go up into arms about it. I think Western culture is too "advanced" or "civilised" to go to into Civil Wars nowadays.

Unless things got....really bad.

Brown vs. White

I see a war starting between a growing latino middle class vs. the  "sinking into poverty" struggling white class.

I think the average American is nearer the middle than either the left or right. It's just the talking heads who have polarized everything.

Some good civil war ideas could include:

1) red vs. blue  (not blood and cryps)

2) religious vs. non-religious

3) class warfare (not hutu vs. tutsi)

4) beatles fans vs. elvis fans

5) brady vs. nra  (hmmmm...hard to guess who'd win that one)

6) NAACP vs. AB

7) UCBerkeley tree sitters vs. Campus Police
