Damn, there is a lot of elitism in First Person Shooters.
Looking at various threads such as "Post your KDR" or the one I just saw, something about "how valuable are you to your team," I notice that a huge majority of people are just... that good.

Well, I'm here to say that I'm only mediocre!
No, I'm not gonna just be a bitch and say "it's because I have a REAL LIFE," because I don't have more of a real life than anyone here...
I'm also not gonna blame my connection, computer or anything else.
I just never got that great at First Person Shooters, and never will.

Sure, I can have the highest score on my team, or in a game even! I can lead my team through all the cap points, I can get the bomb to the bombsite, I can really cut a notch into the enemy's tickets (and save some of our own!)...
But damnit, when I play well, I'm proud, because quite often I'm just hanging around the middle with an unimpressive number of kills, and quite often the most deaths on my team!

why would I post this about myself? Because if you probably asked everyone on BF2s what their KDR's or SPM's were in various games, you'd probably get huge numbers. For sure, a KDR approaching 2...
So then, tell me, besides battlefield, what game doesn't have an overall KDR of 1:1. One person kills, one person dies. This only changes with Medics...
So, where is that sub-one KDR?
Now, I'll admit that in a gaming-based forum, you'd think the average user would be pretty good at games, but I do think that some people just inflate their stats, and others don't post theirs because they're not "1337" enough.

Pshaw! I'm not that great and I DON'T CARE.
My KDR on CoD 4 is about .8
On BF2 it's .95, but considering the medic thing, that's REALLY REALLY UNIMPRESSIVE (and I almost strictly play IO).
In Counter Strike, you'd be arsed to find me in a game with a KDR over 75 percent.
In TF2, I probably COULD be over 1, but I play spy constantly and get killed quite a lot while kamikaze-ing turrets and teleporters.

So my point boils down to this:
What is with the leetness in FPS. Are people afraid to be bad? Why not just be honest. It's okay to be decent. The point is to have fun, not to always be the best.

I know your care cups may be empty, or maybe I have just /failed at what I'm writing, but it's something that I had to say, because I'm a bit tired of all this "1337"ness.

I didn't really get it... But I'll try an answer a question nobody asked.

Most people here are actually pretty good at the game, because most here are a bit more than casual gamers. After all they're on a gaming forum as well as playing games. The masses aren't to smart, or are retarded. Not saying if you come here you're automatically good at games, but it shows you have a keen interest and are pretty devoted. Usually meaning you put time into it, thus being above average.

Combine that with the main game here (BF2) being out for over 2 years now and you have an answer.. to the question nobody asked.

Right! I acknowledge that, and am definitely not complaining about that or anything, rather, I'm just admitting that I'm only decent, and that I know there are others out there (and in here) as well, who admit to their mediocrity.

edit: word choice.

I will vouch for Dill, he is a pretty good player. I think I am a pretty good team player, but my stats suck, my KDR is low (under 1:1) and my SPM is unimpressive. Good thing I play for fun and not for stats, huh?

I agree, the point is to have fun .

Although, I must say, that the rule isn't always necessarily 'those who have good stats have 1337 attitudes'. FPS games are just something you get through oodles of practice, and lots of gritted-teeth tolerance for getting your ass kicked as you learn and improve. I myself think that the 'best' players are those that can not only maintain a good score/stat-record, but who can also remember that they were novice one time too.

And, of course, we're forgetting the entire 'teamwork' side of things nowadays in FPS games. With more and more 'tactical teamwork' shooters being released, that focus more on slow-pace and team-based maps, the era of the lone 1337z0r is dying out. The Quake/Unreal Tournament glorydays are fading, and this 'new school' of shooters such as Call of Duty 4 and Team Fortress 2 are gaining popularity... games where individual stats really don't speak for much.

Perhaps your K : D ratio in CoD4 is 0.8, but that doesn't speak for your actual performance. Nowadays in games, kill:death ratios aren't the mean-average way of testing a players ability and prowess. And, Kill:death ratios certainly aren't the best way to measure and record the amount of fun someone can have!

I don't think he's trying to mention or give reference to other types of game, he's purely saying that even though he plays a lot of FPS, he isn't a 'leetz0r' gamer, and doesn't need to care so much about his stat-peen or his in-game performance to have fun. He's still having fun getting normal average scores, and just being your average gamer... unlike a lot of FPS players out there who like to become overly competitive and serious about a game if they play it for prolonged periods of time.

I'm mediocre, and I know it.

Honestly, charging an enemy with a defibrillator (pun intended) is so much more fun than killing more people than dying. Who gives a shit about my KDR?

What is IMHO the worst by-product of FPS elitism is this whole disscussion of "skill".

A few dicks probably have at some point wrote:

teh-snipa: skilless n00b, try to do that with a gun

t4nkwh0re: oh yeah and sitting around pointing and clicking is hard, armor tanks more skill because I have to quickly kill guys before they hit me in the back with an AT rocket

uberpilot: stfu both of you, neither of you have the skill to fly jets
While this never actually happened, I have seen very similar discussions on this forum. Basically as people think they are so tough, when they see some-one who has done better than them, they mark the other guy's play style off as n00besque and thus their victory is invalid. At the same time this causes them to over look how much fun some things are. Now I love to jihad-jeep, spawn rape with armor, bomb uncaps and my most used weapon is the LMG. Elitist assholes consider these things n00by, but I don't care because I have allot of fun doing them and their Infatry-Only though it make take more skill, is fucking boring.

TF2 I'm good as the soldier, demo and pyro. Suck as everything else.

BF2, I was pretty good in my hey-day but nothing hugely special.

CSS, I'm useful to my team, but I'm not a gamebreaker except in some hostie maps. I'm not bad at getting the hosties out on my own.

CoD4, KDR of 2 in team deathmatch. All I really play. I'm rather cheap in that though. Very campy/cagey player. Good at hiding behind others.

As far as other games go, the only other genre worth mentioning is the ol' RTS. I need units that are fast and do lots of damage or I just fail at them. Only exception would possibly be the Hierarchy of UaW, they are slow but do massive amounts of damage so meh. I can do that. Oh and games like Medieval, in which I'm far better at infantry positioning and such than cavalry maneuvers.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

I'm pretty insane at console fps. On PC I'm great at 2142, but shocking at CS:S. I'm okay at bf2 and CoD4.

TBH I prefer spending my time playing sport instead of getting super keen and wasting time on games

Some days I'm godly at BF2 / 2142 (yes, already...I know, I know.)/ CS:S. But others...I'm shit. It all depends on my mood, I guess.

You don't have to play BF2 that often to be decent at it. Some people were able to pick up the game and score high from the onset. Whether due to natural ability or experience with other FPS's is irrelevant. What is relevant is that the OP is actually boasting about his own mediocrity, which is an obvious cry for attention and a sign of unwarranted jealousy of a thing that apparently makes him say:
