Is there a big difference between how Americans deal with sexuality than Europeans?
Is it just me, or is anything sexual seen as much more offensive than violence? Is it because of the amount of Christians in the USA?

What has caused this difference in mentalities on sexual matters?

I never understood why here in the US you can see a person die on tv but not two people having sex

Oh God yes...

I was born in Germany but have spent most of my adult life in Canada.

Much more liberal and free in Europe, especially compared to the Bible Belt in the US where everyone is screwing but you can't (or don't dare) talk about it.

Another question:
Is it worse to talk about sex or masturbation? Because, to me, it seems to be the latter of the two, which, quite frankly, is natural, and... everyone does it, I mean, who are we kidding?

How much people talk about it i would guess would depend on their social status and who they are with. They aren't gonna announce it to people they cant trust. Europe on the other hand i have no idea and ive never been.

Yes, but your porno private time is "taboo".

The US has a lot of conservative Christians who seem to think that seeing sex is terrible, and will damage you in an irreparable way, while violence is a-ok.  So now the media alludes to it.  Heavily.  The US has some of the MOST sexually suggestive media.  But hey, it's alright because they don't show penises or women's nipples.

Does Europe restrict Violence as much as we restrict sexuality?  That would be interesting

I think the reason we make more raunchy but not quite sexual videos is because its fun to be so close to being "wrong".  Honestly, I don't care that sexual content is limited on our tv's, there's other outlets for someone to get that kind of release (See: Women), and those outlets can be much more regulated than a TV set.  As for violence, most of our violence on tv is good guy vs bad guy, so you know that the violence of the bad guy is wrong, and that the good guy is only doing it because he has to.

Left over swellness from the 40's and 50's. Doesn't seem to affect the film industry much though, you get to see it all barring interacting parts in an R film. To be fair, though, there are some levels of violence that go beyond the R rating.

Erm, no.  Everyone loves sex.  The debate is how much to show in public or in universally accessible media.

The MPAA's scheme for ratings is extremely arbitrary.  Watch "This Film is Not Yet Rated" for some neat examples.  A small group of nitwits can enforce their moral beliefs transparently on all of America's movies.

I didn't say people don't like sex.  I said a noisy group of people don't like to see sex.

Ah, sorry for the misread on your post.  As a parent, I want to be able to provide my kids the opportunity to have a childhood, which means not learning more about sexuality than their maturity can handle.  I believe this is the viewpoint that most of the opposition is coming from, whatever the religion.

I don't need a 1.5hr film to tell me that. The line between R and (formerly) X is pretty vague anymore, but the G and PG-13 ratings are still useful for parents. Bottom line: watch it before you show your kids. If you get offended, stop watching it and get over it.

Only problem is, the US citizenry is staffed by an elite cadre of nitwits who don't believe for one moment that they can think for themselves, and who rely too heavily on things as arbitrary and nonuniform as film ratings.

I agree with you, but I don't think that laws should be passed to make that vision come true.  There are v-chips, as well as the "off" button for the tv.  The problem that I have is when some group of parents wants there to be some "nanny state" because they are too lazy to properly supervise/raise their children.  I only mentioned conservative Christians because usually that is where the obnoxious voice of protest comes from.

Even more than the line for X and R, its that there is no real measurement of what is acceptable and what is not.  If you ever have an hour and a half free, its neat to watch because it investigates some interesting examples that show just how arbitrary the whole system is.

The regulations that are in place have existed for long enough that they're nothing new and I'm not aware of any new laws being proposed on the subject.  I agree with your point that there is technology available to block things and/or the channel can be easily switched.  It’s not always that easy, though, as I’m sure you know if you have kids.

Fair enough, fair enough.  I get irritated when the government passes laws with the "think of the children!!" justification.  New York passed a law saying it was a felony to sell an M rated game to someone under 17.  While I think that kids under 17 should get games from their parents, and their parents should know what the game is, it's not the governments place to step in.  After all, it's not a crime to sell tickets for a rate R movie to a kid who is under 17, but if the MPAA finds out, your theater is screwed.
