British intel source on new NIE: You got suckered, Yanks

I’m woozy at the idea of Europeans having to scold the United States for being naive about a threat.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jh … ran109.xml

British spy chiefs have grave doubts that Iran has mothballed its nuclear weapons programme, as a US intelligence report claimed last week, and believe the CIA has been hoodwinked by Teheran…

British intelligence is concerned that US spy chiefs were so determined to avoid giving President Bush a reason to go to war - as their reports on Saddam Hussein’s weapons programmes did in Iraq - that they got it wrong this time.

A senior British official delivered a withering assessment of US intelligence-gathering abilities in the Middle East and revealed that British spies shared the concerns of Israeli defense chiefs that Iran was still pursuing nuclear weapons.

The source said British analysts believed that Iranian nuclear staff, knowing their phones were tapped, deliberately gave misinformation. “We are sceptical. We want to know what the basis of it is, where did it come from? Was it on the basis of the defector? Was it on the basis of the intercept material? They say things on the phone because they know we are up on the phones. They say black is white. They will say anything to throw us off.
According to the Times, the money intel that convinced U.S. analysts Iran had suspended its weapons programs was, er, some notes they got hold of from a supposed meeting of Iranian military brass which were corroborated by other intel, including some of those oh-so-reliable intercepts the British spook complained of.
[T]he Central Intelligence Agency and other agencies had organized a “red team” to determine if the new information might have been part of an elaborate disinformation campaign mounted by Iran to derail the effort to impose sanctions against it.

In the end, American intelligence officials rejected that theory, though they were challenged to defend that conclusion in a meeting two weeks ago in the White House situation room, in which the notes and deliberations were described to the most senior members of President Bush’s national security team, including Vice President Dick Cheney.

“It was a pretty vivid exchange,” said one participant in the conversation.

Any other sources? Yeah, actually: defectors. Check out this LAT mini-bombshell about the CIA having lured away a handful of mid- to high-level Iranian nuclear officials over the past two years. They claim the defections helped slow the program down but none of the defectors were essential and “none has been in a position to provide comprehensive information on Tehran’s nuclear program.”

Does the NIE matter? Obama was promising to strike a grand bargain with Iran a month ago, when the judgment of U.S. intelligence was still that they did have a weapons program. All this does is recast the left’s strategy from not dealing with the problem to not having any problem, officially, to deal with.

To be honest I though the NIE report was probably bullshit myself, you won't find me referencing it as some kind of gospel anywhere on this forum. You assume too much.

You seem to have no problem with assumptions... as in the first post you wrote in this thread.

Why? What does he have to do with it? I thought stuff like this was in the court of the Secretary of Aggression/Crusades/Freedom/Oil/Propaganda.

Because he is in a very influential position and he is opposed to any military action against Iran. In fact he wants to open dialog between the US and Iran.

Sounds like a reasonable man.

I'm almost afraid of saying this... but why can't Iran have nukes? Israel has 'em. We all have 'em. They've got as much right to nuclear weapons as we do.

He is trying to repair the Rumsfeld damage. The man has a tough task indeed.

Israel needs to get rid of theirs as well. Shame on the French.

You don't ease the threat of Nuclear holocaust by passing Nukes out to everyone. Eventually someone will not appreciate M.A.D.. I'd like to see everyone get rid of them.

That makes two of us. However, do you think it's likely that the United States will EVER give up their nukes? (Not to mention some other countries, of course.)

It will be interesting to see how the U.S. intelligence community responds.  I'm sure they are not going to divulge all the ways they got their intelligence, but at the same time, NIE reports and intelligence in general is not gained from one resource.  It takes multiple, cross-referenced resources for the intelligence community to come to a conclusion.  The NIE report (at least the part that was de-classified) itself stated that the conclusion that the nuclear weapons program was SUSPENDED (not halted) could change on a whim.  Further, it also stated the earliest the a nuclear weapon could be achieved was late 2009.

Where is the evidence that the program has not been suspended?  It is all still just speculation until some decent evidence that their nuclear program is going forward emerges.  Even then, I don't give two shits about Iran having a nuclear weapon in the next ten years.  I highly doubt their government or population would support the use of a nuclear weapon except as a last resort.

I did get a kick out of this report.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/libra … -voa01.htm

Tehran also is accusing Washington of using espionage to compile a new intelligence report, the U.S. National Intelligence Estimate, about Iran's nuclear program.
Huh, you don't say?

Israeli lawmaker Ephraim Sneh, who used to be a deputy defense minister, has described the recent U.S. report as "very flawed." He said the report did not give sufficient weight to Iran's nuclear enrichment program and that even if Iran did suspend its pursuit of nuclear weapons, it could restart the program at any time.

In a statement issued Saturday, the principal deputy director of U.S. National Intelligence, Donald Kerr, said the U.S. intelligence community is confident of the analysis in the report.
I wonder if the Newsmax shill can dig up anything on Donald Kerr, Stingray?

More news regarding Iran...

Sadly no, and the reality is in a world without nukes the United States is the least likely to need them. I think you would find Russia and China holding on tight to theirs as well.
