my pet theory with amateur photography is that there’s a bell curve. as people progress from amateur to intermediate, getting nicer and nicer cameras and more and more lenses, there’s a paradoxical effect: people’s photos become more and more indistinguishable. literally every DLSR enthusiast taking HDR photos and messing about in adobe light works takes the exact same photos. that’s because photography as a hobby is mostly about technology and gadgets, acquiring the latest and greatest, and is less often about individual expression or art. it’s incredibly, incredibly hard to overcome that bell curve effect and achieve a unique ‘vision’ and style.
I'm rather of the school of minimalist post-processing for my personal stuff. A decent photograph can be taken using natural light outdoors even with flawed equipment. Indoors, with supplementary light if need be (or who cares). After that, every layer of filter, and color correction added on can have a detrimental effect. Mostly I used Photoshop for restorations and batch operations.

Bleak and dirty and washed out can be a totally viable mood. I don't to examine my vacation album through the eyes of a mantis shrimp.

film definitely has more character and personality. just the different stock types and combinations. seeing a photo with texture or grain thesedays is a wonderful change. i don't need to see another 15 megapixel shot of the eiffel tower or whatever. i can use google images search.

the same thing happens in music production, which is also overwhelmingly technical and 'process'-based. people spend $1000s buying all the must-have gear and hardware, acquiring all the software and plug-ins, and end up making the same 5 songs as everyone else. it's a totally common pitfall; getting lost in the thickets and so on. the difference is that music production is still pretty arcane and niche in comparison to photography, which is literally everywhere with the advent of smartphones. everyone is now an amateur photographer.

but mostly it's just constitutional. some people have pictorial imaginations; some are musical; some are sculptural; some are writers and scribblers. i'm not very pictorial and i don't tend to see things in terms of 'framed shots' or 'composition'. what composition i do know, and am interested in, is the perspective-destroying post-impressionist and cubist compositions of modern painting. but that's all by the by.

i tend to frame and remember things as symbols, memories, written paragraphs, moments dictated and described in time, experiences transmuted into metaphor, etc. not the photographic 'snapshot'.

on the other hand, the simple portrait-algorithm-enabled camera on the front of my iphone does rather nicely.

"Once you know the rules, then you can break them." Coincidentally also what I was taught in component-level electronics and logic math, in addition to low level programming (a faded skill of mine).

I think sometimes people learn the rules, but then develop no further creatively.

I think if you don't put the effort in now you'll be a bit disappointed when you come back to look at them.

Phones can take good photos, for 99% of people including myself a good compact is often a better choice than a DSLR, and they can take great photos on auto with a little effort and understanding of what its doing and what the settings mean.

point taken. but i am journalling and making field recordings too.

at this point i've met about 4 korean girls with all the whizzbangs and excellent photography knowledge. i'll ask for some reading recommendations.

@dil I don't get why anyone would be mad someone with cheap gear took better photos than them. A motorsports photographer took photos on a 13year old midrange dslr, think the lens was old too, he was doing a cheap setup day. Still looked good, at least on Instagram.
Also screw dslr I love mirrorless.
I use my phone for low effort/throwaway pics, I've only kept a handful of them. I'm trash with it.
I enjoyed looking at your pics uzi

Been awhile since I've ridden one. I'd hate having to keep to its schedule, though.

Commuting from bainbridge is probably nuts but I had a boss that would do it daily. I only ride for pleasure and I always look forward to it, even if it's a 20 minute edmonds-kingston, not sure why, I guess I always associate it with some trip or vacation.

I wouldn't mind taking Port Townsend to Keystone for a drive up to Deception Pass. I'm always in Oak Harbor for business, never got to really take in the sights or visit the park proper.

friend came to stay for a good chunk of june. absolutely thrashed. ate all the food and drank all the dayum dranks.

climbed a few mountains, walked half the city on foot. must have averaged a good 15-20km a day, according to my apple health app. not bad under mild inebriation and in 33 degree heat.

Happy (week after) Bastille Day french people!

Taking pictures or video of fireworks is stupid but it was the first time I've been to Paris (and France) and it landed right on BD, so I took some damn photos, sue me. You can see I'm not alone.
