now this might seem really noob (i kinda am, just getting into more of the tech scene.)

but how do u overclock?? wat program etc? karma for good help.

also i have a AMD Athlon 64+ 2.66 Ghz Dual Core 5200+
so wat should i over clock it to? its a dell if the helps with the heat issue.

also wat is a good program to run stress tests... and check the temperature of CPU etc

Thx.

You overclock in your BIOS not from inside your OS. Dells will be hard to (impossible) to overclock usually. But with a decent motherboard you should be able to reach roughly 3.0GHz. Go in tiny steps though

Prime95 and memtest are ideal for stress testing

Download CPU-Z (google it).

Go to the mainboard tab and tell us what it says.

That should help us a bit more.

you could give ntune a shot. If you're lucky it might just work. Second opinions anyone?

My opinion is, leave good enough alone

/dreams of one day owning a dual core anything...

Does your motherboard have multipliers? Have you messed around much in your BIOS? If so, does it allow you to specify the clocking and voltage? That would be step 1 I would think.

When you first start your computer, keep pressing delete (some mobo's are F10). That should get you into the BIOS. (Basic input/output system)

ok... well in BIOS it says for memory and processor that these fields cannot be altered... does that mean i cant over cloack it?? or do they just say that so i dont sue them if it blows up?

That usually means you can't do shit to it. Your only hope is for physical multipliers on the motherboard itself. Look for little switch looking things.

They should look something like this: https://xs322.xs.to/xs322/07505/mul_dip.jpg

And I can tell you right now that you should just walk away from this overclocking idea. lol Frying your processor would really suck. Seriously, your processor is fast enough for almost anything you want to do.

My suggestion: Find an old piece of junk computer to play around with it on. That way it doesn't really matter if you fry it, which most people do on their first attempts at overclocking.

It's not a dell or some "already made" comp right? cause if it is, you're can't, they don't let you.

lol ok... i just happen to have an old peice of shit computer... (shudders at 750 Mhz CPU) i might try frying that one

yer its a dell oh well

All good bro Just google search overclocking for beginners. There are some really good tutorials out there for free.

Would resetting your CMOS open up those functions?
Or flashing your BIOS?

It's risky, but if you really wanna OC your computer, you might have to.

hmmm i dunno... i think ill just leave it for the moment... gonna build a new computer soon (quad core, 4 GB RAM) so i wont have any problems..

now all i need is for my freakin graphics card to get off backorder and get sent to me!!

thx for the suggestion though

sometimes, but rarely Dell uses asus motherboards with their own bios. Then you are able to reflash to the asus on to open up all sorts of options. But I would only do it if you really know what you are doing.
