Can you point me in direction of optical cable that will fit into back off my sound card which is a 3.5 mm port apparently?

what do the connectors on the back of the speakers look like, also this will not give you true surround sound.

Your sound card has a front panel, right?

This should go in the square hole in the front:

It sounds crap for £200 speakers and £60 sound card.

Apparently i should be connected with Coax or Optical or it will sound pretty rubbish.

yea, you probably need to play with the xfi settings, of course you did install your ram backwards so you may want to have a professional come look at it for you

Hmm maybe i need help with settings then, because this sounds just the same as my £30 5:1 speakers from before...

Someone in my other topic said i NEED coax or optical otherwise there's no point in having a sound card.

The advantage Optical has over twisted wire (coax, XLR, TRS, etc) is that there is no signal noise added by the cable. 1.2 meters of (unbalanced) cable, for example coax, RCA, and 1/4" would probably give you a noticeable amount, depending on the environment.

For more info, I suggest an audio site, not a computer one.... try http://www.sweetwater.com they've got some good stuff.

They should have the adapter from a TOSLink optical to a 3.5mm optical.

I havent tried in game yet, but music sounds pretty normal, even bad. My settings are completely default at moment. Music sounds sort of tinny.

That's as close to surround as you're going to get, sound wise.  The optical/coax won't give you true surround because your speakers (::shit amp: doesn't have a Dolby (DD, PL, DTS) decoder in it.  So at most, the card would do the decoding, and you would get a weird simulated surround sound, eww.  (Coming from someone who's running a true 5.1 set-up, computer speakers are shit).

Now, the fact they they don't sound great could be due to a number of things...

-Source quality.  If you're listening to 128/192kbps MP3 tracks you're going to hear crackling and distortion.  Try to use FLAC or 320/256, there's a difference.
-Streaming audio.  Something like Youtube, Google Video have shit bit rates, and no matter what you connect to your soundcard, you're still going to sound like shit.
-Loose connections.  Go through and make sure all cables are secured.  A loose cable could through the audio off balance.
-EQ's.  Turn off the EQ's in your software programs, and if the speakers have one turn that off too.  ((yes, this includes turning the bass down if you have the option))

So what exactly doesn't sound good?  Games, movie rips, youtube,?....

PROTIP: Listen to a CD (un-ripped) and check if it sounds right.

Listening to 250 kbps song there, what it also does is be loud at the start... then when more instruments come in, it gets quieter?

koala can you send me screenshots of your XFI settings if you have it.

Put the crystalliser settings on the x-fi tool bar to 100%. Does it sound any better. (You may need to install it with CD that came with your sound card)

I don't have an X-fi, but that first screen, the one with the upmix options...fuck around with those.

What options do you have for the ""Upmix Mode"" and ""Upmix""(right below mode) drop down boxes?
