Vista... is.... running... so... slow...

Okay so I just installed Vista again. (Ultimate 64-bit) Everything is moving really slowly, it takes forever for programs to boot up and once I'm in them it really laggy and sluggish (itunes takes forever to switch between songs, it takes forever for the whole system to boot up, microsoft office takes for ever). I don't remember it being this way before at all... I'm kinda confused, is there anything I can do? I've downloaded all of the drivers and they're all up to date. I'm going to go buy a SATA CD drive because I think the one in there right now is on the way out but that shouldn't slow it down too much I don't think.

EDIT: I think that I might reseat my heatsink (and reapply the thermal paste) because my processor is idling a little high (42C) but that shouldn't do it because it was running fine in XP...

Reformat? I just reinstalled vista so it's all new, I have the windows.old file that I'm slowly transferring my old documents over from and I'll delete that when I'm done but I shouldn't need to reformat should i?

It was an upgrade over XP

Have you installed the proper drivers for everything? Nvidia uses different drivers for 64-bit Vista than 32-bit XP, for example.

Wait a sec, you went from 32-bit XP to 64-bit Vista.... I thought that wouldn't work... It didn't work for me. I had to reformat.

i gained around 5 fps, but then again i did upgrade my processor as well, so that was problabley the only thing that stopped it dropping.

3dmark06 dropped under the 10k mark in Vista, but went slightly over 10k again with new drivers though.

reformat... you can boot off the vista disk and delete the partition... then create a partition... then format the partition and install vista...

backup all your files obviously that you want to keep first...

The one thing you've neglected to mention, yet quite possibly the most relevant piece of information about your system. If you have lots of free space then it's not an issue, but if you just have a full up fragmented hard drive then that would explain everything.

have you anointed your mobo with kitten and or puppy blood? always works for me.

but seriously, try uninstalling your x-fi card. I've heard of compatability issues with vista 64 when over 2 or 3gb of ram are installed. It sounds weird, but i would try it.

Anywho, I reformatted.... I'm putting all 6000 of my songs back into itunes, loading on all of my games, and getting back all of my bookmarks

Fuck bookmarks...

But the "god rays" in dx10 Crysis are pretty sweet... and 1600x1200 all very high Crysis is pretty good lookin' too.

It does seem to be running faster though, thanks.

I copied the wrong thing.. it didn't work.. I had to click on each individual link and press ctrl + d.. it took forever, this is the longest night ever.

I installed most of my software junk on vista... then I reformatted and did it all over again.

I gathered all of my spare parts from previous builds together and built a third computer (or I'm in the process of it.. just about to go load XP..):

2 GB ddr2 Ram
Audigy sound card
500w PSU
Thermaltake Armor (fucking huge case, I think it's bigger than my CM Stacker 830...)

Then I'm going to reformat the hard drive on his current pc (below) and give that to my mom because hers is a hunk of junk...

MSI main board
6800 GT
2 GB ddr ram
400w PSU
Thermaltake Tsunami

Vista's running quickly now though..
