I got a little watercolour kit as a random present.

I'm quite possibly the worlds worst sketcher/painter, but it's fun trying.

I'm starting basic, drawing a stella bottle atm lol, but its proving fun, even if it does look shite.

So anyone got any experience?

I can draw poorly. I do it during school to pass the time. I spent about 4 hours last night drawing something.

Have a look around on the interwebs for some tutorials on sketching techniques, I couldn't draw for shit 2 years ago, I'd say I'm between not aweful and OK at drawing now, don't think I'll ever be great but with a few good hints here and there you'll pick stuff up fast, Manga stuff is nice to start with.

Which reminds me, I need to scan all my sketches again

If you want to learn to draw crap.

Start with realism, or as best you can do. Starting with cartoons will simply result in... cartoons. Starting with realistic forms, proportions, figures, etc will give you a better understanding of true shape, structure, and anatomy, all of which can then be applied to making cartoons. This of course would mean interpreting that knowledge and exaggerating it, but it will create better work overall.

There are several good books on watercolor out there, I'll see if I can find some titles.

Yes, I love drawing. I typically use pencil and paper as a medium (I have a nice set of pencils, one of those packs that comes with 10 or so, all of different harnesses). I do pretty good work. I prefer doing still life's to the human figure, as I pretty much suck at getting the proportions just right. I can also do some landscape type drawings with pencil, and I'm not too shabby with drawing animals. I did a damn good picture of a goose in flight about 3 years ago.

My favorite medium of all is oil pastel on some nice heavy paper. You can't get really precise lines, but it really blends nicely. I've also done work with Acrylic and Oil paints. Much like the oil pastels, I prefer oil paints. It gives you time to work vs the acrylics drying rather quickly.

Watercolor is fun, you should like it. Some of my favorite paintings are done in watercolor.

Omnideath is right, learn how to do realism first, then go abstract. You need a good base to work from. Case in point, Picasso went through tons of iterations of the same painting usually to get to the end result. He started with a regular painting, then added some abstraction to it, and did that over and over. He could paint with realism just as good as anyone, he just chose to make it very abstract.
