Jackson Browne - Lives in the Balance

I've been waiting for something to happen
For a week or a month or a year
With the blood in the ink of the headlines
And the sound of the crowd in my ear
You might ask what it takes to remember
When you know that you've seen it before
Where a government lies to a people
And a country is drifting to war

And there's a shadow on the faces
Of the men who send the guns
To the wars that are fought in places
Where their business interest runs

On the radio talk shows and the T.V.
You hear one thing again and again
How the U.S.A. stands for freedom
And we come to the aid of a friend
But who are the ones that we call our friends--
These governments killing their own?
Or the people who finally can't take any more
And they pick up a gun or a brick or a stone
There are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire

There's a shadow on the faces
Of the men who fan the flames
Of the wars that are fought in places
Where we can't even say the names

They sell us the President the same way
They sell us our clothes and our cars
They sell us every thing from youth to religion
The same time they sell us our wars
I want to know who the men in the shadows are
I want to hear somebody asking them why
They can be counted on to tell us who our enemies are
But they're never the ones to fight or to die
And there are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Particularly the part, "they sell us..."    Who is they?

Don't think of it as current propoganda but if you must see a video. Try not to let the video influence your ideas, just the words.

Sorry to say, but this argument is one that has raged in many other debates.  At what point has the interests of the US overextended their bounds.  You will find many answers with the use of the "Search" button

I'm not looking for a debate about what the US should or shouldn't do. I'd just like to know what the guy is trying to say in the song.

This should be a very short thread and it'll be closed/deleted once someone helps me by saying what they think Browne is saying.

That video is proof that Pan Flute Hero would totally work.

It's quite simple.  At what point do people ask for accountability.  At what point do we say the cost is too high.  At what point do we say this is for our benefit only, our economy, and the ability to keep the dollar strong.  At what point do we truly, as US citizens, take into account the costs beyond that which Wally World advertise on the TV's we watch for 5 hours per day....

Need I go on?

I'm a bit confused.  You thanked me for my input and told me I was wrong, but you were asking for "opinions" on what the song meant.  Was I wrong?  Do you know something I don't?  If you do, why did you ask?

The "They" would be the military industrial complex.  This is comprised of a combination of hawkish political action groups like AIPAC and the Project for the New American Century and of defense/nation building corporations like Halliburton.

Browne was actually specifically referring to our support of oppressive regimes in South America during the 80s, although the themes in this song could be applied to our support for China, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and even for Islamic extremists against the Soviets during the Soviet-Afghan War.

We get involved in a lot of conflicts throughout the world, which means we get a lot of blood on our hands and make many enemies we must fight down the line.  Still, I have to admit that I'm beginning to understand that our interventions are often inevitable.

After all...  if we don't get involved, China will.  Look at Darfur for a good example of that....

I told you you were wrong when you said this would spark a debate over yada yada. What I was looking for was an opinion on what the lyrics meant, not how the US should react, go into war, etc. I was just looking for a simple translation of the lyrics (see Turquoise's explanation above ^^). You did that, whether you're right or wrong is up to Jackson Browne and what he "actually meant" by the lyrics. I wasn't sure what these lyrics litteraly translated to and you gave me your opinion, hence the thanks I gave you.

P.S. Also to you Turquoise - thanks.
