Why is getting drunk so appealing?

Me and some friends went into the city to watch the fireworks. The Sydney fireworks (those ones that are the 'best in the world')... We went to Milson's point, which is on the northern side of the bridge. It's this park that's sort of underneath the end of the bridge, and it also goes around to the side. We get in there at about 10 with no problem. However, we leave at 11:20 to get some food (better than the crap in there).
On the way back in, the queue at the enterance point we were lined up at wasn't moving. I asked a cop what was going on, and he said that there was no power (generator went or something) but it would be back in a few minutes. A few minutes later, some official dude came out and said it was closed. We had to use the other enterance point...
We finally get there but they won't let my friend in, CAUSE HE IS 17!?!! After much enquirery, we discovered that some smart dick over at Police HQ had decided to ban all under 18's from the venue***. Now keep in mind that there were more than 5000 people in the park, and only 15 mins to the fireworks. How the fuck were they going to enforce it, especially when the guy said that they would kick people out from inside?!!
We ended up watching the fireworks from just outside it. We were on the wrong side of the Bridge, and we could hardly see any of the fireworks off the 4-5 barges that were on the harbour. Our old spot was fucking tops. What bullshit.
I Should have asked a random cop about this 'rule', cause to me it seems like BS (though we weren't going to argue).
Maybe I should shoot NSW Police an email?
After that we waited till 1am (bridge access opens), met another friend and walked into the city for a few hours.
***Note: There were no age restrictions for the venue listed in the official guides. Alcohol was for sale, but proof of age would have been checked at the point of service...
In summary: I saw some half-decent fireworks with my friends and didn't drink anything. Yay.
