Recording industry says ripping CDs to computer is illegal

The Recording Industry Association of America has filed a landmark federal lawsuit in Arizona, claiming that it is illegal
for users to make copies of CD tracks to their computer for personal use.
Washington (DC) - The Recording Industry Association of America has filed a landmark federal lawsuit in Arizona,
claiming that it is illegal for users to make copies of CD tracks to their computer for personal use.
The RIAA is going after Jeffrey Howell of Scottsdale, AZ. The group alleges that Howell shared 54 music files over the
peer-to-peer network Kazaa. This kind of complaint has become commonplace for the RIAA, but they added something
different to this lawsuit.
Ira Schwartz, an Arizona-based lawyer for the trade group, says Howell is also guilty of making "unauthorized copies" of
CD tracks by ripping them to his computer, even though he may never have shared them with anyone else.

"It is undisputed that Defendant possessed unauthorized copies of Plaintiffs' copyrighted sound recordings on his
computer," said Schwartz in a legal brief. "Once Defendant converted Plaintiffs' recording into the compressed .mp3
format and they are in his shared folder, they are no longer the authorized copies distributed by Plaintiffs."
This means that the RIAA is saying it could actually come after anyone who has ever used a CD ripping program to
transfer tracks from a disc to a computer, regardless of whether or not file sharing was involved.
The organization's
website makes this clearer by noting, "If you make unauthorized copies of copyrighted music recordings ... you could be
held legally liable for thousands of dollars in damages."
The case against Howell is believed to be the first to take this stance this far into the legal process.

If it has gone this far and who knows where it will end or how anal the RIAA can get, but I gladly stop buying CDs or downloading music (legally and illegally). Music Artists nowaday are cardboard cutouts of images the music industry wants to sell.

Nukes are the easy way out. We kidnap each and every lawyer and person who works for them, then we castrate them slowly with molten hot pliers, rip their nails and hair out, then cut their toes off one per minute then one limb an hour, ears, feet, hands, nose, tongue, then eyes, and rip out each one of their teeth. Then decapitate arms, then legs, then cut their bellies open and rip their guts out slowly and painfully, if theyre still alive by then, then shoot them 20 times with a nailgun in the lungs and finally a drill through the heart and brain.

Is it normal that I can actually imagine horrible torture like this?

if it's possible for bf2s to connect so a CD can go around the world, i think a little illegal transportation of nuclear warheads is no problem lol

This has only been filed, it isn't guaranteed yet and there is a likely chance it won't even happen.

if you buy and DL a song for your ipod, but decide to be conscious about losing your ipod/it getting wreaked , so you make a copy of the song so you have a backup of your music on your computer, it is then ilegal to have the copy?

QFT.
I can understand if they are then sharing that via Kazaa across the world, but to have it there for your own use (i.e. NOT in the shared folder)...its pathetic. And petty.

Whats the difference between ripping a CD to your HD for use in Winamp/Media Player (or whatever) and copying one CD onto another one? Its still held in electronic format, but on a different media to a hard-disk.

2/5?

I'd say its far more than that, pretty much anyone with access to a computer

The World Bank goes on to define moderate poverty as basic subsistence living, on $1 to $2 a day. All told, nearly half the world's population lives in poverty -- that's 2.8 billion people living on less than two dollars a day.
That only leaves 0.5/5 which, despite being a big majority, a lot probably don't have computers / download. So, I'd say 2/5 is almost spot on.

Next thing you know they will be going after people that play their car stereo too loud, claiming it constitutes a public exhibition of the product, which is illegal.

As far as I know there was talks of a 76 decibel limit. I'll try and find the article.
