Well, as I have been working more and more with Dw, Ps and Illustrator at the same time ( plus Opera, FF and IE running and all the rest of the normal apps ) I have come to realise that my computer is struggling to keep up.

So, I need to know which is the best option to take.
Currently have an E6600 ( one from the first batch ) @ 3.0GHz and 2GB of OCZ RAM.

I need to know which component will speed up my computer more. I want some argument towards which one is the best.
I am choosing one of the 2 for now, will eventually get both, but I need something that seriously speedens my computer up.

What is your choice?

Thanks.

I'd say the Quad core. Since the RAM doesnt really affect speed in programs such as Dw, Ps etc, and so does CPU speed.

Get the Q6600. And overclock to around 3GHz - 3.2GHz on your artic cooling

What OS are you running? If you're on a 32 bit OS, you'll only get about 2.75 Gb of the 4 used, so the processor would be better. If you're on a 64 bit, the RAM would probably help more.

If its anything its 3.25GB or 3.75GB that 32-bit Vista reads.

I'm on 32 bit Vista.

Am I not correct in saying that both Photoshop and Dreamweaver are hardcore CPU hoggers? Or is it RAM?

But it isn't that. It is the one component that will speed up my computer significantly. In this case, the price is of no significance.

I only see 1 option there and that is Quad.

Quad core, definately. RAM prices are insanely cheap right now so you can always get it later.

Quad core for sure. Dreamweaver will hog one core, and I'm sure PS and Illustrator do too. So that's one for each, and another one to do other stuff

I was the other one. I failed to see that he has an E6600 and not an old Q6600. I thought he was asking if he should go from B  to GO stepping.

If money is no concern get both. Ram is crazy cheap these days.

My XP only reads 2.75 of my 4, and in searching the most common number people had showing up was 2.75.

Depends. Between 2.75 and 3.58 mostly.

Overclock the E6600, then. The RAM will still help.

Edit: Found this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fu … processors

Look where it says Core 2 Quad. Notice the one in your price range is coming out on January 20th. You can last that long.

Edit II: NVM. I think wikipedia is wrong.

Edit III: How necessary is it?

I have OC'ed the E6600. If you had read properly. The oldest batch of E6600 is too unstable to be taken any further - have tried and failed miserable.

It is as necessary as you guys think it is - RAM or CPU. It has to be one or the other.

Edit - I can see that the Q9300 is already out. In the USA only though. Also, its cache is not as big as the Q6600. Maybe wait for the Q9450? But I need to know an exact date of the release.

If you run Ai and Ps together (they are resource hoggers..) - I'd honestly recommend the RAM - apparently 4GB makes a huge difference over 2GB!

Note : I have Vista 32.

Also, my physical memory usage is at 50% with FlashFXP, IDM, Opera ( 12 tabs + IRC ), Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Xfire, WMP, Windows Explorer and Registry Booster.
