Okay So I am for the first time in my life going to the States with my girlfriend but because I am a student cheap tickets was alpha-omega for us. Thus meaning that I will be landing in Boston airport some time in the beginning of July 2008 because it is by far the cheapest city to fly to on the east coast.

My question is then, what is the cheapest way to get from Boston to Washington DC???? And I am not considering Hitchhiking or that kinda of transportation...I know nothing about public transportation in the states, except that I have heard about greyhound buses.

We may have to spent a day or two in Boston is there anything worth seeing there?

and ohh isn't there something about you have to have the chip passports to go to the states???

anyway I will +1 any good suggestions

There's lots to do in Boston, it just depends on what you what to do. If you're into the touristy/historical shit you'll have no trouble being busy. Plus there's a ton of hotties to check out. Good shopping or just window browsing is plenty abundant also.

As for getting to DC from Boston, you have trains (Amtrak), buses (Greyhound, Peter Pan) or flying. If you fly, it would probably be cheaper to depart from Manchester, NH. But then you'd have to figure out a way to get there.

Here's a sampling of train departures from BBY to WAS. I picked random days in July, there might be cheaper days. The Acela is the high speed train so that's why the prices are so much higher.

Be not even 30 minutes .

Still, I would rather take the train then an aeroplane.

You can take the "T" from the airport ("T" = subway) to South station and then get on an Amtrak train to D.C.

Looks like it'll be around $80 - $100 each way.

I just checked flights from BOS to Washington DC and the flight is around $200 round trip depending on which days you plan to fly.  This would probably be the best bet, imo, since it cuts off about 3-4 hours each way from the trip.

All true. Public transportation generally sucks here in the US. Interstate buses and trains are difficult to find, are normally quite slow and usually cost just as much as a plane ticket. A train or bus ride from Boston to D.C. could easily take 10 -12 hours and is probably much longer. If D.C. is really where you want to go, in the end it will probably be the same price, or cheaper, to fly directly there. It will definitely be less of a headache.

Anyway, Boston has a lot of cool stuff to see. If you're really determined to take a bus or train, break up the trip and stop for a day in New York. There's a lot of great stuff there too. Keep in mind that everything in the US is farther apart than most people realize.

Also, when are you coming? I used to live near Boston and can tell you it is freaking cold in the winter.

One last thing, consider getting an international driver's license and renting a car. A rental car will cost you $30 - $50 per day. Depending on where you are, cab fare could be twice that amount. Most rentals have navigation systems in them now as well to keep you from getting lost.

Welcome to the US, I hope you enjoy it here!

Thank you very much for your help. I will consider flying between Boston and DC when you can cut that much of the travel time.

We should arrive in Boston the 4th of July so I guess I am good weather wise.... but anyway  I am from Denmark so I am familiar with the cold of the winter he he.

We have looked into The driver license thing and we may get that...but I don't know yet...anyway thanks.

I am actually licensed to fly helicopters in Denmark....but it is not valid in the states...but I am guessing your suggestion comes with a Pilot.

Train is probably your best bet. Not to late, reasonable speeds, fairly comfortable, and not bad prices. Amtrak is probably the best bet, like Poseidon said.

I am sure there is a bus that could take you to NYC then on down the coast to DC.

You don't want to miss either.
