I used Greyhound when I was there for returns or shortish direct trips as a student. Cheapest. If you're doing continuous travel around the states for a period then try a month-long Eastern Rail Pass which was good value (I went from Wisconsin Dells - Chicago - Buffalo, Niagara - New York - Washington DC - Boston all for a reasonable price). When you're in New York I think you can catch cheapo non-Greyhound buses to various locations from Canal St./Chinatown.

Amtrak to New York City from boston, check out the city for a bit, at least go to Times Square...

Then take a train from New York City down to D.C

Or Gray-line, but you wont be able to see NY, probably just traffic... The train is definitely an experience worth your while

Stop in NYC and I will hook you up, In my opinion, avoid GreyHound or Amtrack if you can, " Punishing " it may prove a false economy not to Fly into DC

Yeah we have thought about it but the first 2 weeks are already planed with an agency (you know a mini cruise around the cities and stuff of the east coast) and the 10 days we will either stay in NY or go to DC or both...so we are not going to get a car.

Does anyone know what you can live for eating wise in the states per day??? I don't mean the cheapest junk food...but normal food?????

It all depends on where you go. In NYC there's plenty of diners and delis that are relatively cheap and have goood food. In DC not so much, but there are a few (notably the Florida Avenue Grill )

Definitely save a few nights for some finer dining though.

The memorials, some museums (since you're a foreigner I'd recommend the US History Museum and Native American History Museum) like the Smithsonian (Natural History, Art, etc). Take a boat trip down the Potomac. Ooh, the Spy Museum is pretty fun as well

And Cowami, 10% if they are /fail (waiting is a shitty job so unless they're total assholes I always tip) to 20% if they're teh win.

edit: If you want I'll PM you the names of some good restaurants
edit2: If you're gonna be in DC on the 4th of July, you MUST go to the National Mall (that's where the Washington Monument etc are) to see the fireworks. I usually get there around 8PM and you can get a view. For front-row "seats" you need to get there much earlier, but frankly they're very enjoyable from a bit further back.

so how did the trip go?
Well if you mean what my trip is going to be then it is something like this

Boston- start of prearranged trip by our agency from  New York - Washington DC - Smoky Mtns - Nashville - Chicago - New York end of trip- 10 days to do what in.

In between the places mentioned are a lot of weird stops also

Don't worry I have been bugging my girlfriend to go to a regular burger joint in the states...you know where everything is home made and they use a coal grill etc.

Edit: I make it sound like I am from one of the developing country's lol
