On the road tonight, there were difficult conditions; namely, it was raining hard and dark. I was returning home at roughly midnight when I saw a cyclist at the far edge of the right lane. He wasn't driving particularly straight, and presented a problem in that he might swerve into my path. Noting this, I made a decision: Should I just move slightly out of the lane to avoid the cyclist by presenting him some extra room, or fully change lanes in case of emergency?

I was very lucky tonight. I chose to switch lanes. As I was passing this cyclist, who had traveled slightly from the edge of the sidewalk further into the driving lane, he fell from his bicycle at the exact moment I was approaching his position. He fell perfectly perpendicular to the road, straight into my lane. At this point, I violently swerved out of the way. Even though I was an entire lane away, he fell far enough to present a danger to my lane.

Had I not changed lanes, instead of only giving him space, I would have hit him without a chance to avoid him. It was a close call even with my precautionary measures. He was only three feet from the side of my automobile. I was also lucky that no cars were in the opposing lane coming in my direction, or the situation would have been much more dire.

The cyclist was either drunk or using drugs. His erratic movements indicated it as much. As much I was not at fault, it would have been difficult for me after hitting someone with my car. Neither I or my passenger are trained enough in first aid (although we did have a cell phone), and it is hard to accept that one actually hit someone with an automobile, causing injuries or death. The legal and bureaucratic process that would have followed would have also been inconvenient.

Luckily, I did not have to be subject to any of this. The event ended itself as insignificant; yet, had it been slightly different, it would have been a life-changing event.

+1 for you for putting safety first.
Always give as much room as you can to pedestrians and bicyclers, especialy children who are very unpredictable.
Slowing down a bit doesn't hurt either

I have two cousins in Vancouver right now. One cycles daily. Luckily both are female otherwise I would have to come up there and we would have a few words. Good choice in changing lanes though.

Nice quick thinking, though it'd be a shame if you accidentally injured yourself or somebody else trying to avoid hurting somebody as irresponsible as him.

In the UK this is an every-day occurence - cyclists are arrogant assholes here, who think the roads were made for them. As are pedestrians for that matter - I hate the pedestrains who hesitate until the last moment, and then run accross the street, forcing you to hit the brakes like a madman.

in gosford today, a 49 year old man supposedly fell off his bike into a 3 metre gully on the side of a road, a passerby spotted him and called an ambulance

he was dead on arrival

im sure it was more than "faling off his bike"
and even if he did a 3 metre fall shouldnt be life threatening, and a 49 year old would be able to survive easy with no major damage, maybe a broken arm if he fell the wrong way or something

I doubt he was drunk. Heavy rain in the dark causes erratic cycling.

Still, you didn't stop? That's something that really annoys me about drivers. They shove you off the road and then it doesen't even occur to them to stop their metal death-machines to see if you survived or to offer to pay for the tire they just caused you to shred on the broken glass at the side of the road.

Noice choice Drakef, but if he was on drugs, you should of hit him - that way theres one less druggie on the street and you've put him outta his misery.

But apart from that little joke serious comment, good choice, you just saved a life

I don't know about you, but if I see an erratic guy looking like he could be on drugs fall off his bike at night in heavy rain, I won't be all too eager to get out of the safety of my car to check if he's okay. Stop to check, sure, but I wouldn't get out.

yeah i mean seriously, our bus driver almost hit one one day and the cyclist came after the bus had stopped and started bitching at the driver and they nearly got into a fight. I really would have loved to see the cyclist get his ass kicked because imho they shouldnt be allowed on the road, all they do is cause problems, like this for example.

Glad everything worked out alright for you.

What pisses me off is that cyclists in my area take up the whole fucking lane on the road. Could they take the path that was specifically made for cyclists and pedestrians so they could be safer? Fuck no... That'd make perfect sense. Instead, they'd rather ride in the only lane. This is LEGAL to top it all off.
