Auto updated WinXP 2 nights ago. Started up my box last night and received the following:
Cannot find: <WINDOWS root>system32\ntoskrl.exe
Please install the file

FFS.. So I have data that I need to recover on the master drive, so I risk it and copy over original XP.
Its running fine, and Im running a Data program, its found approx. 70-90% of the files I want to make another backup of.
After I copy all the files I need, I'll completely reformat old drive. Then slave in 2nd drive that has all BF2/ Games/Movies/ Pictures files.
Right now Windows does not recognize  the 2nd drive(SATA160Gb). BIOS does see it fine. Im assuming that the Raid controller driver hasnt been installed, so Ill deal with that after 2nd reformat.

Im hoping that I will come out with same basic setup. C drive (IDE80Gb) runs Windows and  all basic services/ program files, minus Games/music/movies, which run off G drive. (160GB)

Any good ideas I haven't thought of always appreciated guys.

Honestly it sounds like your going about it the best way I can think of. A bit of a pain, yes, but it will work.

Try with one stick of memory maybe?

I had an ntkrnlmp.exe problem when installing windows 2000 and it was because of faulty ram. In some cases 32-bit OS's won't recognize over 2500mb of ram anyways. This might be about it as well.

Another thing to try may to make sure nothing is overclocked at all (if it is). I found it odd but it actually solved the same exact problem you are having. I set everything to default, comp booted, rebooted, overclocked again and all was good. Just an idea.
I wish you luck (F%^KING WINDOWS!)

Thanks guys! I will take out the 512k stick of ram, but this system has never caused any real headaches. It's been stable as a rock for over 18 months, no spyware, malware, worms, viruses, etc. Ive ran random system checks and truly believe its a software problem vs. any hardware, but Ill test again. Nothing is overclocked, so not worried about that.
Also, Windows has recognized the Ram amount since the system was built, don't think that is the issue either.  Basically I was needing to hear I'm going down the right path, so thanks again. If I have any issues after 2nd format, dealing with the 2nd drive being read, I'll keep up-to-date posts.

Day 1-
1930: Copying 15.11Gb of data from recovered drive. It's all going to a File server at work by FTP.
currently at File 11 of 6990...  Est. time remaining: 928,519 hours, 37 seconds
8 minutes later ... Copying Failed<0 Bytes> Recovered...   OK PlanB... trying to do an advanced recovery... no ETA.. :ffs:

20:22: 2nd attempt to copy and FTP data to server. 3 of 9907 files going... yeah found more data to recover... *crosses- fingers*

Just curious what your control panel -> admin tools -> computer management -> disk management shows? Does it show a second drive at all?

Hope the copy goes well. Sounds like a nice clean format is in order.

*sigh*  Give or take a few gigs, 10-15Gb I was hoping to recover, I give up. Well over 8 hours spent on my day off, leaving with a flippin CD. Not even 5Gb, but a measly 371Mb. Plus my clothes washer leaked a few gallons of water, twice, today. Not bad!

So Im off to pick up a new WD 120Gb thats real cheap, like free. That should help, but not my memories of all the missing data

... off to ... reformat ... again ...

Cya on the flip side.

GG Misrosoft is EA in bed with them?
Peace.

That is why you should ALWAYS install an alternative OS for this type of shit (meaning windows, of course).

OK, Im back on a clean format. Drive C is healthy again (80Gb IDE). 2nd Drive (160Gb SATA) is still not listed in disk management. BIOS reads the drives on boot. [both  master IDE and slave sata] YEA!

Any ideas? I cant find the install disk that came with HD, im thinking thats my problem. So when I search Western Digital Support Model: WD1600JS  (2nd Gen SATA WD Caviar SE 7200rpm)
I only see recovery drivers... Any one know which one I need? Thanks d00dz.

Updating Windows XP, again, pfft. 84 updates installing.
Looks like Im out of the woods again...
