How do I find out what kind of slots I have?

+1 for the first answer that works.

Well it's for someone else, so I'm not sure about the motherboard.

Is PCI-E the standard for newer computers?

PCIe x16 is the new standard for GPUs (replacing AGP)

For other cards PCIe x1/x4 are the new form, but lots of cards are still PCI.

If you're mobo doesn't have PCI-E, then throw it out of the window and get a new one.

Most mobos today have 1-2 (or 4) PCI-E slots and a few PCI slots for sound cards, firewire etc.

It's really not as easy as that, some people aren't rich or don't have jobs.  Saying stuff like this is incredibly ignorant imo.

And less than helpful in most cases

Haha I can't help but agree with him.  You can find motherboards with PCI-E slots for under $50... not that big of an investment really.
