With all our medical advancements we're probably devolving.

If anything we are devolving as a species. Natural selection has been haltered by medicine and feminist groups, and the sick and stupid are now allowed and able to procreate and produce more sick and stupid humans. Not to mention on average, the sick and stupid have far more kids and far earlier then the smart and healthy making the proportion of 'evolved' humans less with each successive generation.

anyway, i think through natural selection people are taller than 1000 years ago.
1,000 years is not enough for the entire race to have evolved biologically. I'm sure there are pockets of humans who have evolved some unique traits, but overall...no.

Interesting question. Yes, I believe we've evolved slightly... slightly. Nothing noticeable, but evolution is always happening. However, we're devolving thanks to societal influences in the phasing-out of "survival of the fittest."
Also, are we responsible for the evolution of viruses to which we are host? AIDS and HIV have only recently become what they are, and others, such as Smallpox, are now extremely rare and mutated thanks to effective vaccines. Also, it's been proven that Influenza has numerous different strains which have evolved thanks to human migration.
So... my short answer is Yes, but not significantly... assuming we're talking about the last 1000 years. If we go back 50,000 years, then it's obvious. Just look at skin color.
Also, think of terms in procreation and social influences that affect attraction. One example is that our average height increases with each generation. Natural selection does still take place.
and we have to remember 1000 years is not a long time, in regards to evolutionHavok wrote:
Well it depends on what time scale you are referring to. Biologically, not much has changed over the last 1000 years. I'm sure there have been a few changes and mutations here and there, but since we are such large animals, it's hard to see dramatic change. If you are speaking on the entirety of humanity's time on Earth, then yes, we've evolved. I said yes because I know that with all the cells in our bodies, there has to have been a few changes over the last 1000 years.
in the past 1000 years we have become much taller beings for example

Our brain got bigger, so the heads of baby's got bigger, meaning vagina's had to be bigger to let baby's through and thus the human penis became longer.
We evolve

Since I'm atheist I have to support the evolution theory, it's either that or genius aliens (they must have evolved then tho)

People are losing hair, and pinkies and toes are becoming less and less flexible/movable.djphetal wrote:

do you think we are losing hair because we know the dangers of skin cancer and we protect ourselves more from the sun?
My ancestor was a monkey millions of years ago.
But in 1000 years nothing has happened.

Evolution needs more than 20 years..Nappy wrote:
