When I signed up 2 years ago, I was excited out of my mind to be a Marine when the time came. I started working out every day, reading up on USMC history and rank structure, perfecting my push-up etc.

But now that my High School era is coming to an end, I am at a crossroads. I am going to have a job when summer starts with the Department of Forestry as a Firefighter, and from there I can pretty much go where ever I choose. But coupled with schooling, etc for that, I wouldn't have time for 6 months of Military training.

But I really still want to go. Military members get extra points in the Fire service, and since I was thinking about aviation, I could also be in the running for a tanker drop gig with the BLM.

I don't know. I am staring at my DEP certificate.. I can tell that I was nervous when I signed it, because my signature is all squiggly. Its a catch 22. I need my Fire courses and job time in, but military service would help a ton.

AFAIK, if you're already hired, your employer is required to keep your job when you get deployed or go to boot camp.

edit: I could be wrong

What do you want to do after the Marines? That is key.

Well then stryyker, surely you could go to BCT and be in the Marines and still have your job as a firefighter? I don't know if the Marines have reserves or not (I assume they do but again I could be wrong D

You know my answer.

grunts = win

I had a job interview a while back for an airline mechanic job.  We got half way into the interview and the guy stopped.  he looked up at me and said interview over.  Needless to say is was like WTF?  He said "I just got to the part on your resume where it said you were a Marine."  I said yes.  He said "You are hired."

Firefighter hopefully, but depending on my college work and BS/BA, I may peruse something more into the CIA or FBI.

That's pretty awesome. Glad the guy could return the favor.

I really don't want to sound like a typical Marine here but I will anyways. If you ain't infantry, you ain't shit. You don't join the Corps to fix engines kid, you join so you can make the grass grow. Now change out of your non bunching panties and pick any MOS you want as long as it starts with 03.

That was basically my thought when I switched from Crash Fire/Rescue.

Ground to be honest. Though I can see how aviation would leave you in a better position when you left the forces. If you should ever decide to leave, which I guess you would...

I wouldn't recommend aviation if you just want a job. It takes a lot of dedication.

Not here.  You get more money working with dead people than you do keeping them alive.

Oh well that's a ball ache. I would of thought being responsible for a $30 000 000 machine would of warranted a bit more pay...

Its a waste of time, and you could do better for your self by getting the job you want now, and keeping it.

if you figure, 4 years in the marine corps or 4 years in the job field you want to be in.  The 4 years in marines dont mean shit.  The 4 years in job expireance does.

In real world corporate america, no one cares about how many push ups one can do, along with if you can march with 70 pounds of shit for 10 miles.  The care about work history.  Now, if you are planning on commissioning as an officer thats a different story.  But enlisting is stupid if you have a job lined up in the career field you want to be in.

Pay equals shit in all branchs

4 years expierance will pay much more than any branch could give.

Besides, you dont want to be a tided up for 8 years.... BTW that how long it real is. 4 year active and 4 inactive which could be called up at anytime.  So factor in 8 years expireance.

8 years will land you a management job in any company if you know whats going on.  After 8 years in military your back at sq 1 trying to land a job.
