Well, yes, I am going to the light side. No more Vista, no more windows.

I want an operating system which is compatible with my computer ( I underline this because I was thinking of Leopard ), one that is secure, one that is advanced and one that has a huge performance boost.

So, Linux is the choice here. I have narrowed it down to 5 products. If you want to suggest another one, please, go ahead.

1. openSUSE
2. Debian GNU/Linux
3. Mandriva Linux
4. Ubuntu Linux
5. Fedora

Now, I know these match my specs:
Secure
Fast
Mature
Stable
Good graphical configuration tools
Good install
Many packages
Full bodied OS.

But I want your opinion on my choice. I have no idea which one to go for. DaReJa said Fedora, but not all of Fedora is good, and Debian looks like the most stable.

So please, enlighten me.

I've always used Fedora, Ubuntu would be my second. From a user perspective, you can have the same desktop (KDE) in either distro.

I'm wanting to go the same way, but frankly there are certain Windows programs I can't live without. I am partial to gaming as well, which is why I doubt I'll ever do more that a dual boot.

EDIT: Ubuntu is nice, especially if you're new to Linux (which I think you are?) Debian is a lot more advanced, and is one of the only distros I have yet to try. Get Debian and report back!

I care not if its advanced. I can deal with advanced. What I can't deal with is a distro which is overloaded with stuff and had no real meaning for what I want to do.

Ghetto, as a side note... all Steam games seem to work with Linux.

I don't care for gaming, I want something that will boost my computers performance and allow me to work multi tasking with programs such as Photoshop and Dreamweaver.

All I ask for is a worthy Distro which has all the qualities of an advanced and powerful OSX.

@ jsnipy, I am going to install a mac skin on Linux when I get it, so my worry isn't in that field.

Zimmer, first of all, kill yourself at the Mac skin comment.

Secondly, will Photoshop and Dreamweaver run on Linux?

@ghetto, the skin is clean, easy to use and is great to operate with. As I said before, if my computer was compatible, I would have get Leopard already.

Zimmer, I am have no technical knowledge about operating system so cant help you here. However I do have a quesiton for you.

What is wrong with your current OS which effects you using Photoshop and Dreamweaver at the same time? IMO Dreamweaver sucks big time when it comes to using up processing power, and even when you close it down it does not release all the memory it was using, but both of them running never seems to effect the performance of my XP machine.

Does Dreamweaver run better on other OSs?

I recommend Ubuntu. It's fast, stable, secure, and you can get your own Ubuntu CD's shipped to your home for free. Download and install, the order the CD's for leetness

It's also really easy to use, and with Beryl, you can get the leetest of leet interface, that even works on DX7 cards, so it won't use much power. (Runs fairly fast on my laptop's 4MB Rage Pro CM, even transparency works at about 15FPS )
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

This is a good idea for a server, not that you couldn't use it for a workstation .. but probally not best choice. CentOS gets all the same updates that you with a paid RedHat Server licence, but for free.

Vista is a hogger. While I may want to deny that sometimes, I just can't.

For example, every Adobe product will work 30% faster and more efficient on a Mac OSX compared to Windows. Linux is at least as powerful as Leopard, so I thought it would be worth a try. Also, I want a 64 bit OSX, and Linux supplies that without compatability errors ( although there are close to none now on Vista, I just don't want to dish out another £70 for a resource hogger OS )

Dreamweaver does suck, but if I can upgrade to 4GB RAM and a new processor, I believe Linux will be a huge boost to my computers performance.

Although, there is one niggle. Will DX10 be supported in Linux? Not that I am a huge gamer anymore, it just would be nice to know.

I have only tried ubuntu and it offered no performance advantage or usability over that of XP. If you want something different, free, and something faster than vista then Ubuntu will probably suffice.
For reference my system: 3.4Ghz Prescott, geforce 6600 agp, 1GB pc2700 ram.

My question is different. I have underlined what I want, he just wants something that works and that is for noobs. I care not for the complexity of the Distro, I just want something that is more performance and stable friendly than Vista.

I've used Ubuntu before, it's pretty nice. I like the GUI, and everything is easy to find/use.

Besides Ubuntu, I'd say Debian ftw.

EDIT: Though my big gripe with Ubuntu, is 64 bit didn't work well for me. Maybe it's the version, or maybe somethin just crapped out - but I couldn't do much with it.

By the way, I hope you have nVidia video card, because ATi doesn't play well with Linux.

You cant run any games on Linux so give up gaming right there.

Uhm, why not just rollback to windows XP instead of going to linux?

Oh, really? Then please tell me why DaReJa can play his steam games on Fedora?

Come back with concrete responses.

Yes, steam/Source games tend to work, since they run on the Steam framework, kinda. But the majority of other games like BF series and CoD, usually won't work under Wine.

EDIT: Über hivemind, Dragonclaw, lol.

Im pretty sure the source engine games were modded to work on WINE for Linux but besides that, not many other games work for linux besides some steam games. You might be able to find some to buy online but they are likely to be insanely overpriced. I found a game that sells for $5 at a bargin bin for $40 on a linux game site.

Reason to use CentOS: It's Red Hat Enterprise Linux, but free. It's a very stable and robust OS, and is very suitable for a workstation. Another big upside is you can choose between KDE and GNOME at install time, as well as the huge repositories.
Only downside is the 6-CD install, but meh. You'll only need all 6 if you install everything on there.

Put Wine, Cedega and Mono on there, and you can run about anything.

If you want to play games, get Cedega.

openSUSE or Ubuntu gets my vote. But then again, my knowledge of Linix dristros is limited.

You could always get a few Linux virtual machines running to try a few out before you take the plunge with one.
