The confrontation happened back in November, and as the retired general notes a) it’s probably connected to China’s refusing our ships a traditional port visit to Hong Kong over Thanksgiving and b) cat and mouse games on the seas aren’t all that uncommon. The US battle group’s response — halting and remaining in confrontation mode for 28 hours probably is unusual though.

Video of the story.

China denied a port call to the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier and its escort ships over Thanksgiving, and it turned away two minesweepers fleeing stormy seas and an Air Force aircraft taking supplies to the U.S. consulate there
A 28 hour stare down with China is worrisome.

Now this is far more worrying than that showdown with Iran... are US-China relations strained at the moment?

I see it as unlikely that this will result in any kind of conflict between the US and China though.  Being denied access to Hong Kong harbour doesnt seem like the kind of action that would warrant military action.  Its odd that China would take this action however, as like the General said, its been done traditionally for years.  And it also worries me that he compares this to the way things happened during the cold war.

Would the US allow Chinese ships into their major city ports?

I believe that Hong Kong is an independent customs territory and economic entity or Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China. So only Hong Kong should decide whether US ships should go there or not. They have been doing it for years and yes Chinese naval vessels have visited the US on several occations. This has a lot to do with China exerting its strengh over expressive pro democratic Hong Kong. Why mess with the US Navy, because the generals run the PLA and Chinese Navy, not necessarily the government.

I wouldn't read too much into it. These 'maneouvres' i.e. sub tailing US battlegroups, have been going on for some time.

There was talk on some chinese forums ( sry can't find link) about a possible naval exercise near Hong Kong in the South China sea around Thanksgiving, which could provide an easier explanation to Kitty Hawk's refusal.

As a curiosity I was actually in Hong Kong during the time of Kitty Hawk's planned stop at port.

Military exercises are never a huge secret.  All that activity doesnt go unnoticed, so I think its unlikely that an exercise was to blame.

There are a couple of issues involving the Straits that have caused concern on all sides. There is a good chance this action was tied to recent Taiwanese elections, trying to influence the Taiwanese that a rabid pro-independence government would be ill-advised. More about posturing for the Taiwanese than for the US.

Maybe the idea of shifting our trade to nations other than China will finally begin to catch on.  Fuck China.

The balance is really off with China. It is because of a weak yuan. They purposely keep it low to keep the growth.  We actually trade more with Canada. I wish it were more though.

Main export partners: Canada 23%, Mexico 14%, Japan 6%, Mainland the People's Republic of China 6%,[8] United Kingdom 3.5%

Main import partners: Canada 17%, China 16%, Mexico 11%, Japan 8%, Germany 5%

Good points...  that whole pegging thing should be illegal, but of course, there's nothing we can really do about that.

We sacrifice manufacturing jobs for retail.

China is the big threat to the US right now.  However I do not believe that they are in a good position to go to war with the US.  The main thing stopping them is that America owes billions, likely trillions to China.  If China went to war with America, they would lose trillions.  If China really wanted to destroy America, they would demand the money first, wrecking the US economy.  There will eventually be a conflict between the two, but probably not anytime soon...

Same over here. The past 15 years or so many manufacturing jobs were lost to east European countries, but even those jobs seem to become more costly so there is a shift towards Asia.

The only solution is a fiscal ban on imported goods, but that's not in the interest of free trade. But a low yuan is also not in the interest of free trade.
