Topic of the week would work better. To hard to coordinate that every day. Dibs on week 3.

I want to know what is going to happen after the first month when Atheism/Religion, Iraq/GWB, Israel/Palestine, etc. have been talked about.  It could be great fun for all.

I think emphasis should be placed on topics that aren't usually discussed. When people pick a week, they are required to scrounge up reading, (more than just wiki) and develop not just their views on it, but an informative post for people who probably don't know much about the topic.

the only major advantage i see to this is it will give newer members, or members who don't post as often as others, to get a chance for you big karma guys to read and consider what they have to say [assuming these not-so-well-known members ?sign up? for their assigned week/day

It'd be nice to have a "Topic of the Week" stickied at the top. Just gives something for discussion that might not have otherwise come up or gotten as many views.

I'm down for it. In fact, I've been brewing a thread idea I got from a book today...I'll wait until this gets implemented.

My opinions:
Start with topic of the week.  It's a bit of an overload to do it once per day.  Ramping up is easier than ramping down.  Also, recommend posting next week's topic ahead of time.  Also recommend topics get picked by individuals - not a "poll" but a key person to kick it off.  Like move thru the HOF first, then the last person names the next...so on and so on.  Plus if the OP should be balanced.  Also - need weiner dogs somewhere in the process.

1 - HOF members are privately asked if they would like to reserve a week

2 - Sticky made after appropriate amount of time is passed, at least three weeks are set up beforehand with HOF members getting preference over regular members, after that go by who gets their interest submitted. Sticky will also include links to previous topic of the week threads.

3 - Every week (Sunday - Sunday, so people can see the new topic first thing Monday morning?) a new topic is made, previous one closed and added to archive. People are lined up up to six weeks in advance, if you have already gone you can be added again at the bottom of the list. Don't want to let the wait list get to long to avoid people forgetting/leaving/no longer caring.

That is pretty much what I had in mind. I don't know about closing them though. It might distract from the new ones but I don't like the idea of killing a good discussion.

Coordinating with all the HOF members might be troublesome also.

I figure give it a week, then open it up to the public. It's not like it's the end of the earth if they don't get to be one of the first posts, but after earning the distinction of being a respected member they should get a first crack at it. (imo)

About closing, killing a good discussion isn't good, but it kinda defeats the purpose for "Topic of the Week" if it becomes "Topic of the next couple weeks, and somewhat throughout the year as it gets revived". Just not the same ring.

And really, after a week of discussion I think things will be starting to drag out and getting off-topic to at least some degree. Maybe if a topic exhibits a lot of interest it could surface later in a Part II thread, with the original thread summarized, where people were going with the discussion,  what the current debate was, that stuff. Really rejuvenate a topic with fresh information and perspectives.
