Ever since I was young, it was always in my mind to become an "army man," then an infrantryman, then a paratrooper, then a Ranger, but my parents discouraged me from following that path because of coming in contanct with some of the stupidest people I would ever meet, even though I would probably start out as an officer. I've been reinforced with this heroic images from all the movies and whatnot that it's hard for me to accept the fact that it's not as ideal as I would imagine. I'm sure it's always been like this and I'm generalizing, but I can't help but notice that the best and brightest aren't rushing to join up.
The average military member is more educated than the general US population.
Sure, we have idiots, but then, there are no idiot-free places.

Is there ever an occasion were this would work? I mean I'm in the joining military frame of mind. When i want to join I'll drag my ass into the recruitment centre and sign up when I want to.

That's what I'm saying. Are there really that many service members that wouldn't of joined if they hadn't got drive by recruited?

If you could get CamPo or Sergriver to enlist.. that'd be something

Tbh I think a draft would solve ALOT of problems in ALOT of countries when they get back, it's more of a good thing rather than a bad thing. Also adds some colour to your life.

edit:

but back on topic, what's so bad about the guys recruiting? I mean you're like the public they need, high schoolers. best for them to drive by high schools and try to look for some people, too bad they never do that here, I'd like to have some conversations with these people ;-].

Actually no it groups in people who don't wanna be there with people that do. People that wanna hide behind the corner and people who wanna assault a position.

You can see what I'm getting at.

The best armies in the world didn't get to be the best by telling Fat ass Joe to join up. Or clinically depressed Alan to fire a machine gun.

Good question, I for one would join the Icelandic military if it existed, a recruiter would however reduce the chances of me joining.

Come to think of it, I've never seen a Canadian military anywhere.
Last week we had two CF soldiers at my high school recruiting kids to join the reserves.

Drafting, 'cause there's nothing like forcing your mentality and ideals on others through legislation.

I think its safe to say that a majority of the world's armies were conscripted throughout history.

If conscription had been in place since WWII, when Americans seemed to be particularly rip-roaring to join then we'd see it as normal.

Today though, tons and tons of people seem anti-war or anti-military... a draft would not go down nearly as well as in WWII.

you know, we've only had an all volunteer army since the 1970's.  I would say that any generation of Americans born within the last 30 something years are a bit spoiled.  Concrisption is the reality for most of the developed world.

Yeah, they did. They were times when life was much simpler, when people had morals and what not. Thousands of people signed up to the Army lying about their age in WW1 and 2. People as young as 14. It was seen as an honour to fight.

Wars these days aren't the same. Defending freedom and all that don't really apply to today's wars.

I dont think so though.   War is supposed to be bad.   If it wasnt, we would be fighting them a lot more.   I think it just take one to look at it with a bit of perspective.   Any war fought during colonialism could hardly be considered necessary for the stability of the home nation.

Yep, it's the norm for plenty of 1st world countries... but like I said, putting in a draft now would just cause lots of public backlash. Then again, a teacher at my school once noted how in the 70s students who opposed Vietnam actually protested... nowadays (and I'm guilty of this as well) we just bitch on our blogs or Facebook or whatever.

I personally wouldn't want too many draftees in combat roles. I obviously haven't served, but I'd rather have a guy willing to fight covering my ass than some bitter Private Pyle.
