Ever since I was young, it was always in my mind to become an "army man," then an infrantryman, then a paratrooper, then a Ranger, but my parents discouraged me from following that path because of coming in contanct with some of the stupidest people I would ever meet, even though I would probably start out as an officer. I've been reinforced with this heroic images from all the movies and whatnot that it's hard for me to accept the fact that it's not as ideal as I would imagine. I'm sure it's always been like this and I'm generalizing, but I can't help but notice that the best and brightest aren't rushing to join up.

Actually no it groups in people who don't wanna be there with people that do. People that wanna hide behind the corner and people who wanna assault a position.

The best armies in the world didn't get to be the best by telling Fat ass Joe to join up. Or clinically depressed Alan to fire a machine gun.

I think its safe to say that a majority of the world's armies were conscripted throughout history.

If conscription had been in place since WWII, when Americans seemed to be particularly rip-roaring to join then we'd see it as normal.

Today though, tons and tons of people seem anti-war or anti-military... a draft would not go down nearly as well as in WWII.

Yeah, they did. They were times when life was much simpler, when people had morals and what not. Thousands of people signed up to the Army lying about their age in WW1 and 2. People as young as 14. It was seen as an honour to fight.

Wars these days aren't the same. Defending freedom and all that don't really apply to today's wars.

you know, we've only had an all volunteer army since the 1970's.  I would say that any generation of Americans born within the last 30 something years are a bit spoiled.  Concrisption is the reality for most of the developed world.
