Bring it up with some kind of consumer watchdog. Then they are fucked. They will either have to pay you back the half you paid or back down.

I have had very similar experiences. HONESTLY, the best results I have had is this: Get a lawyer to write a letter. That's it. I have a pre-paid legal service through work that will do this for me, but know w lot of lawyers will do that part of it dirt cheap. A letter that basically says they were in breach of contract and that you are not responsible for the charges that you incurred for services you did not receive. Also put in there that any further attempts to collect these funds shall be met with legal action.

That usually scares the piss right our of their persistence.

Shee-it. When I moved, they were done pretty much instantly, and even got to the new house before I did, despite me taking a more direct route on my bike (which there wasn't room for in the truck or the car and I didn't want to trust them with). They unloaded the truck quickly, and even managed to leave room to move despite there being twice as much stuff as space.
The only issue was waiting an hour for my mother to show up with the keys to the new house, and the bowl from the mixer suddenly not being there when we came to unpack it a year later.
