Well I need some major help with my computer. I seem to have a problem with system resources available for my computer. When I start my computer, and for a few minutes after starting, I can open any programs I want and have multiple ones running at the same time. As time goes on, my computer will eventually get to the point where it doesn't open programs up properly, or they won't open at all. At this point, I can not right click, or I have limited right click abilities unless I close a program that is open. Right now I can open up Firefox, iTunes, and Xfire, but I then won't be able to right click on anything unless I close one of them. Photoshop CS2 will not open at all most times, instead it will just make the error sound and close. On the rare time that it does actually open, it says there aren't enough system resources. Same thing happened with Microsoft Excel the other day.

This just started to happen around mid-December, and the only thing I remembering installing was the Medieval II Total War Patch and that didn't install properly and it wouldn't let me uninstall it. I had to manually remove it. This is not the first time this has happened. The same thing happened last year and I reformatted this summer and it went away.

Does anyone know what's going on here and how I can fix it without wiping everything? It is extremely frustrating and I'm really sick of it. I've run Norton AV scans and it hasn't picked up anything and I've used CCleaner to clean up any other crap that wasn't be used, but problem is still there.

Thanks for any help.

I know CCleaner isn't a virus scanner, but I didn't know if  it would clean out random crap that may be using up my resources.
Thanks for the links, I've tried AVG Spyware and it hasn't solved the problem. I'll try the others

And I forgot to post my system specs, here are the basics:
Windows XP Home
2GB Ram
Intel Core 2 Duo 6700 2.66Ghz
320GB Hard drive with 215GB Free
