Republican Thompson out of presidential race

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Fred Thompson dropped out as a presidential candidate on Tuesday, ending a short-lived campaign that got off to a late start and never gathered steam.

Thompson, a former Tennessee senator whose hangdog face is familiar to millions of Americans from his movie and television roles, pulled out of the race after finishing a distant third in South Carolina on Saturday and not doing well in New Hampshire and Iowa.

"Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for president of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort," Thompson said in a statement issued by his campaign.

Hillary may be bribing Edwards to stay in . Barrack is certainly the lesser of two evils. I also think he has the potential to heal the cross party wounds. Americans have challenges ahead and we need unity.

I'd say McCain and Romney, possibly Guiliani, depending on how he does in Florida.

The media is doing all they can to ensure it's a Clinton or Obama candidacy. They want to be able to pat themselves on the back internationally about having a woman or minority candidate/President, regardless of who is best qualified for the job.

Romney and probably McCain. I think Giuliani has tubed himself by ignoring the early primaries. There is something to be said for the momentum they have given Romney, McCain, and Huckabee.
