K well, about a year or so ago, I got the "Free" Vista upgrade thing when I bought my copy of Windows XP Media Edition...

Until now, I've really had no need to upgrade.. but with some new classes starting next week, I wanted to get Microsoft word, and all that other crap.. I've got English 12, and even though I know you can download programs that match it, the one I tried, openoffice or whatever it is.. I think thats the name of it was really shitty and it was a pain in the ass to print anything..

So since now that I don't really play that many computer games that much anymore, I'd thought I would make the jump to Vista...

I don't really care about backing up any of my files.. As the only file I care about is my Music File, and thats all either on my phone of my Ipod..

So, I pop in the disk, my computer can run Vista Easily.. It gives me a warning that some programs won't run when I install it, but thats to be expected.. So I do the upgrade, where I can keep some of my files... Instead of doing the clean upgrade..

So I run it, takes a few hours. Try to start my computer now, and It won't start. Says there are problems starting Windows, I try Safe mode, and every other option of Safe Mode.. Nothing..

I try the "startup repair" for like an hour, ir doesn't make any progress.. So I end it..

I'm gonna run the Startup repair while I'm at work for like 4 hours today, if I come back and nothings changed, how do I go about doing a complete clean re-instal of Vista?

When I boot from the CD.. And try and instal it again, I type in my CD key, then it says to insert my original disk of the version I have.. The Vista CD is in.. nothing, I try the XP CD.. Also nothing..

What the fuck do I do?

reformat cures all... lol... if you installed xp media center fresh and then upgraded to vista immediately... you might have decent results... but if you have added programs and files and surfes the net.. and then upgrade... troubles multiply

I can't just reformat..

When I try and go and enter the CD key, after I enter it.. It says

"To use the Product key you entered, start the installation from your existing version of Windows."

Wtf, Vista is my current version of Windows, but its kinda hard to do that when it won't fucking start.

Exactly. I think the problem is that you CAN'T start it. A reformat really is your best choice. A clean slate is better.

So then how the fuck do I go about reformatting it, I don't have that option before I enter in my CD Key..

Probably because you only have the upgrade version of vista.

Do you still have the original install disc for XP? If so, reformat using that, install XP, the upgrade onto vista.

can you boot to the cd when windows starts up(by making the cd the first boot device in the bios)
... and then delete the C partition... create a C partition then format that partition... then install XP and then upgrade to Vista?

Ya.. I'm trying that right now.. But I dunno if my comp is reading my XP disk or something..

Cause I keep getting "reboot and select proper boot device, or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key..

In most cases, I probably just did it wrong in the  bios, but I keep trying different combos, and its not working..

Ohhh Fuck off...

My XP CD isn't being read by the drive. theres like a few scratches on it, but nothing deep or anything..

I don't even know how it got them because I keep the disk in its box, and I haven't used it before now..

The only other copy of Windows I have is Microsoft Office XP, but that CD is cracked in two.. Wasn't me who broke it... And then even then, I don't think I could instal the Vista upgrade then..

I know its not reading the XP CD, because I put in the windows Vista one, and it read it right away.. fucking bullshit..

One thing after another with this shit..

This is making me angry...

My Laptop will read my XP Disk fine.. my Vista CD will read fine on my Desktop.. but when I enter the XP CD, It won't fucking read it...

What the hell do I do.. I've tried cleaning the disk.. At first I thought maybe I'm doing something wrong in the Bios.. but I don't think I am..

This is like.. A Nightmare..

Do you have another computer? If so, take out the HDD and daisy chain it to the other one.. clear out your files (whatever you need), then reformat using that computer. It worked for me last time...

Don't enter a CD-Key, and don't let it contact the Interwebs (updates, activation, etc.)

Once you're up and running, run the setup (within Windows) and choose to upgrade, it will copy itself (again) but allow you to use your cdkey.

You must reformat. It has to be installed on a clean slate now.

A) Go to Freezer7Pros house (or a friend who has worthless computer shit)
B) Get a HDD > 3GB
C) Install into computer
D) Take out current HDD(s)
E) Install XP on crap HDD
F) Install HDD(s) into computer
G) Format HDD(s) setting them as slave and working from crap HDD
H) Remove crap HDD, and bin
I) Install Vista clean onto your master HDD

EDIT: Spelling

EDIT2: Didn't read whole post. Meh, use this if Vista install doesn't work.
