There will be fads wherever you go, internet or not, wherever there are people. When they get out of hand they will be put down, (see ping-pong, picture spam) but if they are relatively contained and well within forum rules there is nothing wrong with them. (see big white sigs, user battles)
That said it will be put down if it gets out of hand, for now it's fine as long as it keeps itself to the threads it has. (poll going to be closed soon, main thread, WiC thread, and strangely the one about soviet invasion was completely independent of the main fad)
