So I wanted to squeeze a little more performance out of my mediocre PC. I downloaded 3Dmark06 and ran it with my X2 4800 clocked at 2.6ghz and my 7900gs at factory clocks of 600mhz/800mhz. That got a 5304.

Then I used Rivatuner to set the card at 618mhz/825mhz. It got a 4842.

How does a higher clocked video card get me a lower score in 3Dmark?

It usually shouldn't but isn't it running too hot/instable after the overclock thus causing lower FPS and a lower score?

heat... or depends when you run it.

Your score will be different each time, minute temp differences in your components contribute a lot.

I tend to run it as soon as xp logs me in

18/25MHz clock wouldn't do a shitting snail to your performance. I have my 7600GS clocked at 620/480MHz, as opposed to 400/400MHz factory. And that buys me about 300 points in 3DMark06.

Get an aftermarket cooler and do a couple hundred MHz.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I was doing the incremental thing. Increase it by a few mhz, test, increase again, etc.

Also, your post is completely pointless and contributes nothing to the topic.

Why does it contribute nothing? He has explained how a small overclock will do shit all, and that 100mhz overclock nets him about 300 3dmarks.

Seems pretty helpful and contributing to me.

I've always had the same results...that's why I don't overclock my video cards. Does very little difference in my experiences.

However, OC that 4800 some more!

How much higher you think it can go on stock hs/f?
