My old laptop which my girlfriend always uses is on its last legs, so I am looking for a very cheap laptop which she can just use to surf the web and do some word processing on.

Anyone know of a good site to get cheap laptops from?

Those things are cool, but remember they have no DVD drive of any form and come with a cut down Linux OS, installing XP is possible but means buying a USB CD-ROM drive, it'll also make it run like a tank.

Well he did say he is looking for a very cheap laptop. If you want an external dvd drive you just buy and external rack for the drive.

Nah, the Eee is cool, but the display (800x480) and lack of optical devices kill it.

Just get some dirt-cheap 15.4" lappy. They go for under $400 for the cheapest ones.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
