You don't need 4 gigs of memory and get the Q9300. Btw check if PSU is good enough to power everything.
he doesnt need 4 GB but if he is buy other good components (CPU, motherboard etc) 4GB at todays prices is not to bad and i think in the long run it would be better. (RAM prices are supposidly going up again)
Everything above 2 gigs is bull right now. He can buy another 2 gigs later. Besides he should invest in faster memory 1000+.
true faster memory would be very good. but if his willing to pay abit more money 4GB of 1000+ would be fantastic but yes he doesnt really need 4GB

Yes either he gets 4 gigs 1000+ or 2 gigs 1000+. Everything under is waste of money. Good memory is cheap right now.

I got that part. Faster RAM is better, but there are so many numbers and brands that it's hard for me to choose the best RAM.

Okay, the RAM really was the one that I picked at random based more on it's brand name than anything else. What about the other things?

I'd also take a new Monitor, a big crt monitor on your desk is out of these days , and the price is still under 2000
Computerparts seem to be really expensive in Australia

The configuration you have is really nice!

PS: you can choose to either keep your mouse and keyboard, but as you are going for a whole new machine i'd go with a mx518/G5 mouse

After a friend recommended a site closer to home, I came up with the stuff above. I looked but couldn't find any cheap fast 2GB ram. It would probably be cheaper to buy that stuff from Sup's German site. The motherboard supports new Penryn CPUs, according to this article. So I was thinking of waiting and if the new CPUs don't come out in time to just go with the Q6600.

I dunno if a better motherboard would actually increase performance, but right now there's a disparity between it's price and everything else.

Terror I'm still undecided as to if I want to buy a new monitor. If I wanna feel all big and mighty for a few days I could just hook up my LCD TV to the computer, and then when I get sick of it just go back to the CRT (although I probably wouldn't).

So everything's fine with those components? How long does it usually take for someone to build a computer the first time around?

Realised I forgot the harddrive, and decided to scrap Vista for good ol' XP. Got better case with better power box, now 550W, should be enough, right? Dumped fast 1066 RAM for 800 RAM because it was just too expensive.
