I got four PC's in the house all connected via a router. Can I get a network going for easy transfers to each other and various file sharing? Windows XP isn't helping me at all on setting it up successfully... Any tips/links/softwares that would help?

I simply right click on the harddrives i want to share, and enable file sharing. I can see my brothers when he comes, but i think it only works over one os, e.g me and my bro are on xp pro, the other pc is on xp home and we can't see that.

Just put them all in the same work-group with file sharing enabled.

well i've always just used the networking wizard in XP. make sure every PC is in the same workgroup, has a different name, and has file sharing turned on.

Definitely make sure the drives have sharing enabled, otherwise they won't show up.

I can have everything 100% correctly set-up, according to Windows, me, and every, single, fucking guide on the internet, and my computers won't find each others. I gave up a year ago. Not even a fucking RK-45 will work!! Internet access is fine, all routing and hubbing is fine, but the PC's won't find each others.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

yeah, but you can hardlink to find them by typing \\nameofthepc in the browser. Even if he doesn't recognize it by searching for computers, this will work 99% of the times if your network is set up correct.

Thanks De_Jappe, I'll have to try that. But like Freezer I've tried for ages with no luck, and if Freezer can't do it then I'm not going to get my hopes up. But I'm trying to share files between an XP machine and a Vista one so maybe that's the problem.

Actually, it's \\nameofthepc. Or \\ipofthepc.

I've networked my Vista to XP before with no problems.

@freezer, your router probably isn't configured properly...

Forget about using My Network Places to find anything, it doesn't find shit. Open it up, but on the left is Show Workgroup Computers. This will actually actively find the computers.

If you can't see computers, they are on the wrong Workgroup, don't have File and Print Sharing enabled, or are not sharing anything.

If you can see computers but it bitches and moans about permissions its a user issue. To fix this I enable the Guest account in Computer Management (different to Guest in User Accounts), and give it a password. Next time you try to access the computer it should now prompt.

It probably is. Simple networking in XP is absolutely atrocious (whereas if you set something up using a server it all works properly). Usually it works, but often it just doesn't. There are all sorts of flaws with it. It's actually more likely to work properly cross networking between Vista and XP. Vista networking works absolutely beautifully.

things to remember:

1. make sure file and print sharing is enabled on the PC's firewalls.

2. make sure all computers are a member of the same workgroup.

3. make sure all the PCs share a common account and password (unless you don't mind using a different account to connect to the respective machines.)

4. make sure guest authentication is disabled on the machines (unless you want to enable the guest acct which is a bad idea.)

PM me if you are really stuck and want some more in-depth help.

fail.  never share the root of a hard drive.

you're better off creating a user on all machines with the same user name and password.  enabling the guest acct isn't worth it.

there are no flaws with it.  if it doesn't work, it's not configured correctly.

I'm going to all the computers now to set up the same workgroup name. I'll see if I can set this up now!

once thats done and all are rebooted, try to ping each of the systems.  the first step is connectivity.

well if he has a wireless router he's sharing it with everyone tbh...

its just a bad idea.  any hacker or system with a virus connected to his home network will have a field day with a root share.

Thats why theres this magical thing called wireless security, i have wep enabled, and pc's trying to connect must be manually authenticated by me, also you must be authenticated on the network to log in to the router setup, and did I mention that where I live is full of old people.

a half a second google search will give anyone the basic knowledge of capturing wireless traffic to start cracking your wep key.  besides, WEP has several serious security flaws and exploits.  MAC and IP spoofers make router network authentication a joke.  i'm not trying to sound like some condescending asshole... trust me, sharing a root of a hard drive is just a flat out bad idea.  if even one pc on your network was compromised by someone downloading a virus, it would scan and find your root share.  that just let's the hacker know which door to start knocking on, while NOT sharing the root removes the door all together.
