Many of you know that both my brothers hold several points on their license. Speeding is the primary issue here. I'd like to take  a case, from my  brother to perhaps "show" you that driving limits are simply ridiculous:

Case #1: My brother attained his 'R' license - restriction to 45mph until you become a full driver. As a frequent traveler and motorway user, he has several hundred (now a whopping several thousand) under his driving belt (no pun intended). In a dangerous situation, he was sticking to the 45mph limit even though the motorway speed limit was 70 - he was not allowed to go any faster. He was being a danger to other cars on the road - other cars having to, sometimes abruptly, swerve out of his way, yell some sort of insult down to him and speed on. He was a danger. So what did he do? He went up to 70, what everyone else was doing. And then what happened? Yep, you guessed! Those little sirens came bursting up and 20 minutes later so did three penalty points - for being a considerate driver - no!? Throughout an NI driving test, unless you live near a motorway, you will usually not be traveling (ever) on a motorway).

My other brother also has two speeding offences for driving over the speed limit. No other cars around, not holding anyone up - such as doing 40 in a 30 zone (dual lane two way no cars...30 - work that out?)

Does it not seem that the UK seriously need to re-consider just what the current road situation is like? Would love to hear opinions from fellow NIers in particular..

What?

There aren't different speed restrictions for learner drivers (I used to do 70mph in my driving lessons), nor are learner drivers allowed on motorways. What the hell is an 'R' license?

I think it is ridiculous to limit the speed of a driver through issuance of different licenses, unless they are going to provide specific lanes for those licenses.

Tell your brothers to obey the speed limit, then they won't get speeding tickets.  It really is that simple.

I guess NI has different driving laws.

I believe there is another license for people who live in rural areas hence "R" license...I dunno where kyle lives though.

What? It stands for restricted.

That does seem pretty stupid, especially like you say on the motorways.

I like what they're hopefully going to introduce........taking a year to learn and then pass and maybe increasing the age limit.

How did the police know your brother had an R licence?

In Northern Ireland, learner drivers are limited to a speed of 45 mph (72 km/h), and drivers who have passed their test within the previous year must display "R" plates (restricted) and are also limited to a speed of 45 mph (72 km/h) until the expiry of the restricted period. "R" plates are similar in style to "L" plates, with a thick-set dark orange R displayed on a white background

But I guess he left his R plates on if they caught him?

If you have an R licence and want to go over 45 why not take the R plates off?

R plates displayed (mandatory) - think of an L plate...but with 'R' Taking them off is illegal.

If you need to limit someone's speed under the normal speedlimit, the person shouldn't be allowed in traffic in the first place.
Sounds ridiculous to me.

I think that the 45 speed limit restriction implies that he should not be on roads that have a limit of 70.

He needs to take alternative routes.

Yea, but so's speeding right?

I'd have thought the police would have been more lenient if you said you forgot to put them on or they blew off, Than if they caught you speeding.

I took my R Plates down the night before they were due to come down @ about 8pm and I ended up stopped at a checkpoint and the cunt was actually gonna do me for it, only an other cop talked him out of it, anyways.. to you're point.. you're right the PSNI seem to do fuck all now except hide in hedges trying to catch people speeding maybe they should try solving a few crimes instead..

Alternate routes to an international airport? It'd take way over an hour in comparison to..35-40 minutes on the motorway! The PSNI have a habit of camping here, frankly, I've dreamt of just going !k police camping.

Ah.

Fair enough. The system we have in GB seems to make far more sense. Learner drivers need someone else with a license in the car with them and cannot drive on motorways, yet can go at full speed. When you pass your test, you've passed and can do anything other road users can - although you can get banned easier (less points required for them to take your license away).

Anyway, I wouldn't know about all that because I've got a proper license and I would never speed....

GB laws make so much more sense. Why NI hasn't adopted this policy I have no idea! Although, the idea of having to have someone in the car with you does sound like a major turn off. An alfa? You are a true petrolhead
