This is unacceptable.

Orignal Story

CBS News wrote:

"When he enlisted in 1997, from his initial medical checkup - you know what I mean, physical - the doctor documented that he had melanoma, but never told him 'have anyone follow up on it,'" Ferraro said. "And that was back in '97. If we would have known back in '97, he would still be with us."

CBS News was given a copy of that medical report. The doctor notes skin as "abnormal." In further details he describes it as "melanoma on the right buttocks." There's no recommendation for further treatment.
Honestly?  What the hell...?

How did they even qualify to become doctors? That's the thanks he gets. Joins to serve, then the government fails him.

There's a quote in there from George Washington. Something to the effect of "When a soldier puts on the uniform, he does not cease being a citizen."

Being unable to sue for medical malpractice (not that I'm a fan of it, but in extreme cases such as this, it is warranted) just because you're a military member (or family member) is ludicrous. Those idiots need to be held accountable for their actions...so that another military member and his/her family don't have to go through that shit.

I'll be the first to say that military doctors aren't the only ones who misdiagnose, but some of those docs are notorious. I would've sought a second opinion.

Sort of reminds me of adenovirus being written off as bronchitis.

I was lucky enough to get my hernia taken care of by civilian doctors, paid for by the army.

I'd blame the doctor more than anyone. Yea not paying for his funeral is a shitty thing but the army doesn't wanna waste money. Sueing isn't going to make anything better. It wont bring him back. So theres no point really.

I don't really know what to say in response to that video. Such blatant neglect and outright disrespect to those who fight for our nation is preposterous. Its shameful that such young people are taken away from us because of the stupidity of those who are "certified" as medical doctors. And also, I found it interesting how the ARMY would not allow contact with the doctor. Not only does this mean that the doctor wanted to stay away from the case to avoid what he had coming, but the army even noticed what a huge blunder they had created and wanted to stay away from it. Finally, the fact that the soldier had "retired" from the army due to their neglect, making the family pay for the funeral was also obsurd. Obviously, this was not my main concern watching this, but it was something that stood out when I was watching it.

Overall, this cannot be avoided by Congress and cases like this must show them that they need to make change. If they don't, then quite simply, they are stupid...

But anyway, that was my opinion on it.

What fighting for it can do, however, is force Congress into making some radical changes. That's why he wanted them to continue the fight.

I'm certain proper medical care for this man would've cost a fraction of a Tomahawk missile.

Because it's about the Navy and Marine Corps, that's how.

But the issue is DoD-wide. There was an AF SSgt in the story, as well. All Services have problems and Federal law is what prohibits any armed service member, regardless of branch, from suing for medical malpractice.

An ABSOLUTE FUCKING DISGRACE! These high ranking officers (doctors) are complete wankers. I just can't comprehend how the family feels at the news he could have been saved.

Don't confuse the doctors with the regular officers. They are completely different. The only thing they have in common is their rank.
