Im 17 years old and im thinking of joing the Navy. Navy will help me pay for college and I really want to go out and see the world. Im not just going out as a raw recruit though, im going through the ROTC and I need some opinions/sugestions from those military guys out there. As an officer I want the people below me to both like me and respect me. I want to be an officer that people listen to and want to do what I say but I also dont want to be the one who does nothing but barks orders all day.

Share what you liked/disliked about your officers/boss/higher ups. I'm interested to know what earns people's trust/respect and the certain things that make people hate you. I know you military guys have stories on your officers that you've served under and I would like to hear them.

It sounds to me like you could get what what you want just by being a chief petty officer (E-7) which is enlisted.  They get to do a lot of stuff like that and I believe they are promoted just like officers are, rather than advanced like the lower ranks.

If you're good at leading, be an officer.
Otherwise, don't.

If you want to be a Good Officer, enlist first, then go to college, then come back.
However, the best advice is

I know, but officers get paid more and have more opportunities than an enlisted soldier.

the first rule of being a good leader, is not to be nice, otherwise people will take advantage of you and stuff will get done half assed.

Do you want to be a leader?  Don't take that question lightly.  There are a lot of benefits of being a leader, but there are enormous responsibilities that go with them.

Officers are the managers and executives of the military.  Enlisted/ WOs are the hands-on workers in most areas. (Pilots are the most notable exception that I can think of.)  Which would you rather do?

As for leadership advice, (I'm not the best source, but...)
Look out for your people.

Be quick to give them credit for success, and be prepared to take responsibility for failure upon yourself.  If your team succeeds, it is because of the team's efforts.  If it fails, well it was your job to prevent that.

Lead by example.  If you want people to act or perform to a certain level, you must do the same (or more).
