yeah, massive radiation exposure will do that.

But yes, the containment and cleanup procedures were pathetic at best...

The plant was a fuckup from the start. Bad construction, not containment building.

And now the EU refuses to fund something to replace the existing structure.

One of the interesting things that came out of the Chernobyl disaster was that everyone was expecting hundreds of thousands of cancer deaths from the surrounding areas. In the end it was estimated to have killed about 4,000 people.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4216102.stm

As with many of these terrible tragedies the world leared alot from it in this case about radiation exposure, it turns out that low level radiation doses were a whole lot less dangerous than was previously thought.

Dr Burton Bennett, chairman of the Chernobyl Forum and an authority on radiation effects, said: "This was a very serious accident with major health consequences, especially for thousands of workers exposed in the early days who received very high radiation doses, and for the thousands more stricken with thyroid cancer.

"By and large, however, we have not found profound negative health impacts to the rest of the population in surrounding areas, nor have we found widespread contamination that would continue to pose a substantial threat to human health, within a few exceptional, restricted areas."

chernobyl, probably the worst ecological / nuclear disaster of the 20th century.  very sad a lot of people with radiation poisoning dying. chernobyl is the perfect example of incompetance.

Yet anyone ever noticed that the Chernobyl area (Pripyat etc) is a haven for wildlife which appears unaffected by the contamination?

It's only a haven because there are no humans.
They're still better off somewhere else.

It's good to know that the radioactive aftermath of a nuclear meltdown makes for a better habitat than the areas around populated places. Go us.

I'd like to go to Chernobyl. Would be scary but awesome. Actually, there's a lot of things I'd like to see before something prevents me from doing so.

That video about made me sick when I watched it. Just the part about the woman giving birth to the baby part. The rest just made me mildly queasy.
