Before I start:  I searched for "iPod touch" and came with 2 pages of responses.  I read through every thread that looked relevant, but I want to hear fresh opinions.

Please, also, if you say "apple is teh fail" or "iPod is ghey" or any of that...generalizations like that do not help me.  I would love if current owners who have tested it would respond so that I can make an educated decision, not one based on whimsical disdain for a publicly traded corporation.

I'm seriously considering getting the iPod touch, 16gb.  It looks really cool, and I would love to have mobile web browsing.

My Questions: wrote:

Do I really have to pay for any software I want to put on it, like the email and maps feature?  Can I just use webmail, or outlook?

Is the internet connection on it any good?

I have an iPod hookup on my truck right now.  Does the iPod touch work with the normal iPod buttplug, or is the hardware different?

Can you use pandora, or other such streaming music sites, on it?

Is it bluetooth?
Also, if you recommend something about it, or if you genuinely think there is a better product out there, please let me know!

Cheers!

I believe you do have to pay for that stuff that Apple charges you for but you could always just jailbreak it. Here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=nLjab_dmWCg
One of my friends did it and he has a bunch of stuff, some fun, some useless

The internet is just Wi-Fi.

It uses the same connector yes.

It doesn't have bluetooth. (The iphone does).

And I don't have either..

yes, pay AFAIK

Is the internet connection on it any good?

Completely depends on the netowrk you're connecting to, but pages load as fast as my PC on most networks....so yes.

I have an iPod hookup on my truck right now.  Does the iPod touch work with the normal iPod buttplug, or is the hardware different?

Works fine.

Can you use pandora, or other such streaming music sites, on it?

Yes

Is it bluetooth?

no
I have it and highly recommend it, watching movies on it is an added bonus....the qaulity was better than I expected. The ONE downside IMO is the limit to 16Gb memory, but the rest is 10/10.

and I guess I don't have to use itunes to put stuff on my iPod...?  I can just download through the network?

If I just download MP3s through my network, will the iPod be able to play them?

To reiterate what justice said, yes, you need to pay 20 dollars for I think Weather, Stocks and E-Mail. Stuff that's all free on the iPhone.

i got one in november for my birthday, and I love it. The internet is through any wifi network you have a password for. Its really fast and functional. As far as other Apps, I havent paid a cent. You can jailbreak your ipod touch and iphone, then use a third party installer to put whatever apps u want on it. Sounds like a daunting task, but it can be done pretty easily. Just goto www.jailbreakme.com with the itouch and get the software directly from there. And I am NOT an apple fanboy. I actually hate mac and apple and the ppl who use it. I just like their music players :-P

Negative, this was fixed by apple in recent updates...if you buy a new one, you can't do this, just to warn you.

However, hackers are constantly trying to jailbreak the new updates from apple...but I wouldn't bank on anything....you could install update 1.1.1 on your touch, but that leads to all sorts of complications....just dont.

No...you have to be close to a Wireless network that is either open, or you know the password to.

For example, most uni's and schools have their own wireless, just get the password type in the Proxy settings and connect

Locate Wi-Fi spots which you can access.

well I wouldn't use stocks, and for the weather, I'll just look outside, so my concern is the email...what's the story for the email?  I set it up with the Pop3 and all....?  is it worth it?

so then what does the iPod touch do out of the box?  web browsing.....and everything an ipod video does?  because frankly, if that's the case, then it's not worth it.

Before my HD told me it was going to die, I was answering your question.  I own a 16 GB
You have to pay for Apple software, otherwise jailbreak it.  I use Gmail Mobile and it works great.

The internet connection is just about as fast as a laptop's wireless connection.  So it's pretty fast.

It'll work, same exact port.  Just make sure it's not a mini dock or something, it won't fit in there.  It'll fit if it's just a plug though.

Haven't tried, but I'm guessing not.  Websites with a lot of programming (like Java and stuff) don't work right.

Nope.

Eidt: I'm loving every minute of my time spent with mine.

i was thinking, what's the point of paying for a weather application if you can just go to weather.com??  lol

and if anyone is a webmaster...you get your email at www.yourURL.com/webmail

Does that work with the touch?

I use WeatherBug, they have a iPhone/Touch friendly site that works nicely.

Can't answer the 2nd question though, sorry.

My 1.1.2 is jailbroken.  And 1.1.3 is jailbroken as well, but I haven't updated mine, since it's a pain putting all my contacts, videos, music, photos, and apps back on - and I see no point going from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3.

right.  but here in the rest of the thread, we're talking about the other stuff that the iPod touch can do.

thanks for your valued input.
