The Treaty of Lisbon (also known as the Reform Treaty) is a treaty signed on December 13, 2007 at a summit in Lisbon, Portugal. It amends the existing treaties of the EU. It is due to come into force in 2009, if successfully ratified by all EU member states, and would carry out most of the reforms previously proposed in the rejected European Constitution.

Some of the provisions include:

- A merged foreign representative post.
- Extended role for the European parliament.
- A president of the European Council.

Ireland is the only EU member that is set to hold a public referendum on the Treaty, and not parliamentary vote, because the Irish constitution requires a referendum on amendments like those the Treaty of Lisbon will impose. So basically Ireland is really the only EU nation capable of stopping this from going ahead.

I will admit to not having read up on the details of the treaty but my default position for the upcoming referendum is NO, especially in light of the fact that Tony Blair is frontrunner for the post of the new EU president. I would direct all concerned EU citizens to the following webpage:

What are your views on the Lisbon Treaty?

Sounds as bad or worse than the American Union and Amero being obsessed about by socialist minded republicans.

'United States of Europe' here we come?

I agree with Poe, not so much because I have an issue with Blair, (infact I dont really have any atall) but because am not a big fan of how the EU governs its member states.  All these imposed restrictions and regulations, I dont remember voting for some twat to make those descisions for me?  For something originally invented to increase trade between members, I think it is going to far.

I'm for it. It will give the EU a more unified structure and also grant more power to the EU parliament.

I hope ireland ratifies it. it will have near zero impact on your daily lifes.

well, in that case your memory is letting you down, because that is exactly what political representation is all about. You vote for some twats to make decisions for you.

QFE.

That's why people who never vote should never complain about politicians.

Not quite, it is in westminster, or holyrood I have voted for them to make my descisions for me.  I did not ask for yet another MEP to make yet more descisions of my apparant behalf.  Even if we consider, what I want means shit, the fact remains there elected from regional lists, so its party leadership who descides who goes there, how do I have a say in that, particularly in the UK with a FPTP system.

I'm all for a unified Europe, I would love the idea of it. Now maybe I don't agree with some parts, and I don't really want Tony Blair to govern us ("-.-) but hell, one europe suits me just fine.

edit: I will sign the petition against Tony Blair as EU president. If there's going to be one I want him to be elected democratically.

well, Martyn, you're part of the EU, so you'll have to live with the fact that there is going to be some regulation on EU level that affects ireland.

you're going to have to take the bad with the good, so-to-speak.  or join a political party and take part.

I don't know what people are so afraid of when it comes to the EU. I mean, it's not like it is a european government or s.th.

Thing is though, there making descisions that directly impact what happens in our countries.  And even indirectly, effect policies from elected governments in each state.  And we didnt vote for them to do so.

In fairness bell, we do elect them. The elections draw such little fanfare though that you could be forgiven for missing them. This Treaty will make those elections and the actions of those elected individuals more important than ever.

I like the European Union on a number of levels for various reasons e.g. common currency and trade policies and ease of travel around the continent etc. but this kind of power centralisation scares me a little to be honest ...especially if they are talking about putting a war criminal in place as the inaugural President.

I'll be voting yes for this treaty as im very pro-EU and all the things its done to help my country. The EU presidents dont have as much authority as the NO campaigners make out Tony Blair will not be our benevolent dictator if this is ratified!
