I was watching the Sabres game today and...

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Panthers forward Richard Zednik was taken to a Buffalo hospital after he suffered a deep cut on the right side of his neck while being struck by a teammate's skate during the third period of Florida's 5-3 loss to the Sabres on Sunday night.

Zednik was behind the play and skating into the right corner of the Sabres' zone when teammate Olli Jokinen was upended by Sabres defenseman Brian Campbell. Jokinen fell head-first to the ice, and his right leg flew up and struck Zednik directly on the side of the neck.

Zednik was clutching his neck as he immediately raced to the Florida bench, leaving a long trail of blood. A Sabres trainer jumped on the ice to apply a towel across the player's neck, and Zednik was immediately escorted to the Panthers' dressing room.

The crowd stood in applause after the Sabres announced over the P.A. system that Zednik was in stable condition.

Play was stopped for more than 15 minutes as crews scraped the blood from the ice.

Prior to resuming the game, referee Bill McCreary and Panthers coach Jacques Martin consulted in the tunnel outside the Panthers' dressing room.

Sabres general manager Darcy Regier was also spotted talking with NHL vice president Colin Campbell. Campbell, the league's director of hockey operations, attended the game in part because his son, Gregory Campbell, plays for the Panthers.

video on this site shows the hit

I watched this live.. It was really scary watching this. There was a puddle of blood on the ice where he fell, and a trail of blood all the way from the net to the bench. I thought he was going to to die. I haven't found a video that shows the blood yet.. it was really bad though.

Hockey is an awesome sport, and I have a lot of respect for the people who play it, but it seems weird to play a contact sport where everyone has sharp blades on their feet...

Damn, that sucks - guess he got lucky it wasn't deeper, otherwise he probably wouldn't have been able to skate over from a larger flow, and thus loss of blood, or worse yet, have his trachea sliced open.  Yeah, really lucky.

I have always wondered why don't they use something like a protective collar because this is not the first time this happens.

Even if they were wearing a protective collar it would still cut him.. those blades are like knives they will cut through anything.

Yeah, was just gonna post that. Freaky. Malarkchuk got hit much worse though.

Zednik was on the Islanders last year and I got to see him play. I hope he gets better soon.

Here's the vid btw:

There is body armor made specifically for knives.

It's probably a rare enough occurrence though that it would be too cumbersome to wear at all times.

Yes, wear a knife proof cloth around your neck.

So, remind me of how that's going to work when you have to track a puck moving around at a velocity equivalent to HOLYSHIT.

tbh - As much of a Sabres fan I am - them Winning wasn't the best part of the game - It was knowing that Zednik was alright. It's happened, what? Twice in NHL history? But talk about bad luck - the Sabres have been in both games where it happened.
