Okay, So I have 2 computers (wait 1 belongs to my dad )

One has Internet (My dad's)--
One doesn't (my main computer)--

I need to download some SWBF2 maps and some Audio Extracting Apps. from the Internet...can I just connect my computer *(via Erthanet) to his, and get internet acess, or do I need to plug it in USB (what my Comp. Repair guy told me), or do I need to...I don't know?!?

you need to buy a router, tbh...

Otherwise, you could try the ethernet, then on his right click on the internet connection property window-thing (right click my internet places) and click "share connection".

That's what i did.  Handy also that you can add a friend's computer no sweat with it.

Plus, mine has firewall protection in it, which is nice.

Make sure you get a router, not a hub, if you decide to get one.  I made that dumb mistake, so im just warnin ya .

you could just uplug his computer from the modem for a while, unless he seriously needs it.

not as easy as it sounds.  you are basically setting up a routing service on your PC with the share connection feature.  you need to understand routing tables to get it to work, and really not something the average user can accomplish.

edit:  easy answer - use a jump drive...

If you try to use ICS, the computer acting as the host will need two NICs.  One connects to the internet service, and the other provides the LAN side connection; essentially Windows is doing software NAT, like a router would do, only not as well as a router.

Quite honestly I would just download the files using your dad's computer, and then use a thumb/jump drive (as already suggested) or you can use a crossover cable to directly connect the two computers, without the need for a hub/switch, but that would require than you manually specify the IP address and subnet mask, so if that isn't something you understand, go with the thumb/jump drive suggestion.

I think he said its a USB modem. If he has a listing in Network Connections he could attempt to bridge them/ICS.

Or he could buy a router. Fuck USB modem's tbf.

Edit: Our (err, Siemen's) modems have both USB and Ethernet, and you can plug a computer in each...

I use a crossover cable and use my second ethernet connection on my motherboard to put my second PC on the net. It works fine.

If you get another NIC or have another ethernet on your motherboard, and you have a crossover cable, I can tell you how to set it up.

I actually used the ethernet cable that comes with an Xbox 360, and modified it to make my own crossover cable.
