Anyone here using the new windows 64 bit OS? Just wondering how well/stable it is. I'll be getting a new mobo and processor soon (ASUS A8N-SLI Premium / AMD Athlon 64 4000+). Should I bother getting the widows 64 bit? or wait as there are few 64 bit programs out there. Thanx.
I didn't know they had come out with it yet; I thought they were still working on it. Knowing Microsoft, it is probably smart to be suspicious of it at this point.
I'm using x64 on my nice dual-core 4200+, but only for the geek street cred. If you're going to purchase a 64-bit OS, I'd wait until Vista comes out.
It runs great for me, other than a few minor problems. Apparently a lot of printers don't have x64 drivers, but mine does. And I have no USB driver for my older Cybershot digital camera, but I can still hook it up in PictBridge mode... just can't use it as a webcam without that driver (so no big loss there). And finally, I can't flash my burner's firmware because the launcher program is a 16-bit app. For the longest time, there was no decent virtual drive software. Finally Daemon-Tools came to the rescue so that problem is solved now.
Seriously, there is really no advantage to using x64 right now. If anything it might run a little slower on most games (like BF2) because it has to run them through the 32-bit downgrader thingy (I'm having a brainfart as to the actual name ). Half-life 2 just released a native x64 version but it's a rare exception.

I would say that it would only be useful at this point if you have 64bit apps. There aren't very many applications out right now with 64bit versions. If you run a 32bit version of the application in 64bit windows, I think it will have to use 32bit emulation, which will problably decrease performance. As far as I know, BF2 does not have a 64bit version.
EDIT: on a side note, Valve released a 64bit version of HL2 and CSS that works with AMD 64bit procs.

I have never heard of this, and it has never happened to me... ???durkamoz wrote:

I am currently running an x2 3800+ and x64 and it works just fine.

As for x64 there aren't a ton of apps out yet that are 64 bit but more and more are coming. Half Life 2 is now 64bit and Far Cry put out a 64bit patch. There are other apps out there as well. I am running it because I get MS stuff for free (msdn) but if you already have a copy of 32bit XP keep using that for now and if you want to go to 64 bit wait until Vista comes out this year and buy a 64 bit version of that.

When I had both cores on in BF2 I would get on a server and play for a couple of minutes and then get "your connection to the server has been lost" or something like that.
If I disable a core before joining a server I am great.
Have you updated your CPU driver? (It felt totally weird to update a driver for the CPU The operating system should have that covered...) But AMD released a new driver for their dual-core processors that might be worth looking into:durkamoz wrote:

hmmmm, interesting.
Thanks for the link. I will check that out when I get home.

i know very little about this topic, but isnt there an issue where windows 32 bit can only reference 3 gigs of system memory? I read about this on wikipedia... hang on ill find a link

under the pros and cons section
I dont know what kind of a difference this makes, and most people dont have 3 gigs of ram anyway.

Goddamn microsoft and their blatant plagiarism. Someone tell Steven Spielberg quick.<{SoE}>Agamemnar wrote:
Vista looks insane. Some of them features are straight from Minority Report.
I'd say wait a while - the 64 bit processors I heard are nice, but since vista can handle a LOT of ram, your max right now can only be like, 4 gigs i think - depending on the mobo. My advice would be to maybe check out the new dual core CPUs...I think those run on windows xp.
What about Intel dualcore? does it disconnect often?
I'm using x64 with an Athlon64 3700+. A couple of things:
1) There is no performance increase to be had yet, so don't buy it/install it if you think you'll get an increase in FPS;
2) To whoever it was who said that 32bit apps have to run in 32bit emulation mode: this is true, but there's no performance decrease;
3) It boots into windows really quickly. That's about the only difference I noticed.
Spec:
A64 3700+ (San Diego)
2gb Dual Channel Corsair Twin-X
XFX GeForce 7800 GTX
ASUS A8N SLI
2x 120gb SATA

I already posted this on another post but here it is again:
I have BF2 installed on xp & X64 (I have both loaded on my comp). There is a lot of Graphics(X800 GTO) glitches on x64 and it will crash to windows randomly. I haven't yet figured out how to fix them.
But when it is working. It is fast. Every thing is SO much faster. I am usually one of the first to ones to spawn. It is great. But The graphics glitches suck and the crashing sucks.
On XP I don't have any of thest problems. Its is just slower. Everything probably take twice as long to load.
If anybody knows how to fix this on X64 please help!

From what I've read, x64 doesn't really like games. Just wait for Vista I guess, or use XP.tino275 wrote:

Ditto on what others said, wait for Vista if you want 64bit.
XP x64 isn't really supported all that well by driver vendors and game publishers.
My work machine is a Sempron 2800 (64bit, sse3 etc), I was recently doing a OS test for a server under vmware and installed Gentoo for x64, all compiled for 64bit and to be honest couldn't notice the speed difference.
That said, because it was a server test it was only command line. And before anyone mentions ricer etc, Gentoo is the best Linux distro for Netatalk 2.x bar none. So shut up.
I was about to buy an Athlon 4800+, GeForce 512MB 7800GTX (XFX XXX edition) etc. However, holiday to Australia came up so i'm holding back on buying until I know for sure I have a nice little amount of money.

I have the XP 64 bit edition and I frankly haven't noticed much difference in overall performance having upgraded from 32bit. The difference in fps playing hl2 with the 64bit patch is only about 2 maybe 3 frames. I have noticed a nice boost in my photoshop loading time tho.....
dont get 64 bit........you can get a 64 bit processor but dont get windows x64 youll regret it .........
first of all if you run any 32 bit based programs you will have to go into 32bit emulation mode to run it (this will greatly slow down the performance of your pc)
so overall it just isnt worth it ...........yet..........someday all of our programs will be converted to 64 bit and it will be okay, but for now it just isnt worth the money time and effort.

UT2004 is 64-bit as well. It was a silent launch so not many people know about it. Just check AMD's website.
I bought an AMD 64 3700 over Thanksgiving and gave XP-64 a try. I don't think it was really worth it; the only difference I've noticed is the same one mentioned before about load times. I'm having problems even running other MS software like Office. My Outlook stopped working one day and I can't get support for a lot of printer drivers. I did find it very cool to be one of the first to spawn in a new map round, although I noticed that I've already fallen down on the technology curve far enough so that flags have begun to be capped when I spawn now.

what the hell is the difference I have regular windows? whats so good about this windows 64 bit
I dual-boot x64 and standard XP-pro and 64 works fine with BF2. I notice no performance degradation.
