and what GFX and power supply do you have? That mobo rocks, I have the gigabyte p35-S3.
That processor is made of win, and with 4 gigs of 800mhz ram you can open up 12321 programs at a time, even with vista!

the e8400 is better for gaming .... and tbh quad is pointless for now ....future proof yes ...but not most beneficial right now ..as little pieces of software support quad core. A great piece of technology yes....but in my mind not suited for the software available to us.

ive been told tht the distribution of processing amongst cores may in some rare cases, cause performace lower thn tht of a dual core.

Yeah they have been at that price for a while, only reason i thought most would skip dual core and jump straight to quad.

I always thought the e8400was better than the q6600

yes ...for now it is ...people presume tht becuase the q6600 is a "quad" core its automatically better ...but if you some up the pro's and con's the e8400 is probably a better piece of hardware for now.....

I just bought this ram last week: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820231145 (2 x 2GB 1000mhz 5-5-5-15 2.0-2.1V Gskill)

All I can say is for $100 bucks, it is shockingly awesome... overclocks great (1066-1100mhz depending on your luck) and only on 2.1V and it remains cool to the touch. This is in an ASUS P5N32-E SLI + board which is extremely picky about ram (I've been through 2 sets...don't get this asus board it is too picky with ram).

My old crucial ballistix ran smokin hot as did my kingston. This stuff is like room temperature even when overclocked. Great stuff.

EDIT: I agree about the e8400. Get it, overclock it, and it will pay off more than 4 cores. Even in Crysis, the extra 2 cores just sit there toodlin along and kick in once in never to do some extra physics, but it barely makes a difference. 2 cores at higher clock with less heat from the 45nm architecture is going to accomplish a lot more than four cores, even four cores overclocked.

Also what is your video card? If you have an 8800 its massive heat output will effect your overclock for both card and cpu unless you have excellent cooling. I have excellent air cooling and it still effects my shit. I'd think a four core heat dumper + an 8800 would be a problem for a case that doesn't have high air flow. It might be better to have the e8400 just for the edge on heat dissipation it has due to 45nm and only 2 cores. I guess the four cores don't really get hot unless they are all in use so this might be a moot point.

And surely Vista 64-bit?

Since 32-bit is the same as 32-bit XP when it comes to RAM.

True, now. But some argue about how future proof the quad will be (when more thing utilize more cores) and the fact its very overclockable. I'd stick with what you got (opinion), unless you never ever plan to upgrade again

I'll start with 32-bit as I already have it burned on a DVD. Then I'll probably dl 64-bit.

FYI: You can't upgrade 32bit to 64bit in place. You'll have to install the 64bit OS clean, then re-install all your applications over. Then delete the old Windows32 bit directory, as that will just be taking up space at that point.
