8800GT is better. The cores are basically the same, as the G94 is a sliced G92 with half the shaders but faster clocks.
Considering 9600gt has half the shaders and is about 10% slower makes it one hell of a card.
If you got the monies, go for the GT.
8800GT, its faster than the 9600 and only 20 bucks more! (here in the netherlands)

I recently forked out for a new PC and decided on the 8800 GT instead of 256MB duals. After the videos I've done alot of people say its the best graphics they have seen, so I would reakon its a excellent graphics card to get if your willing to pay the 150 ish quid over here in the UK. I don't know about the 9600 GT but for me, this 8800, is outstanding, can run all my games on high/ultra graphics, no lagg, no fuss, no problem.
are u stupid.....8800gt cains the 9600 ....which has been made as a budget card i.e the 9000 series equivalent to the 8600gt....
The 8800GT gets faster benchmarks in nearly everything. 9600GT is a waste of money tbh.
Isnt the 9600GT the same card as the 8800GS (effectivly)?

The replies in this thread are stupid. The 9600 is not made to compete with the 8800GT, even if it does. It's an almost next-gen card with a very, very good price/performance ratio. It goes for under $/€200, which very few 8800GT's do. The 9600 is what the 8600 should've been; Twice the power of it's predecessor. That's what the nVidia *600 series is known for. Every new card is 2x the power of the last one. The 7600 is about twice as fast as the 6600, the 6600 is about twice as fast as the 5600, which is twice as fast as the 4600. The 8600 failed miserably at this, but look now, the 9600 is out, and it's 2-3x faster than the 7/8600, at a very affordable price.
The 8800GT will outperform it, as the 7800GT will outperform an 8600GT, but it's close, as it has always been.
So, if you've got the money, and are willing to spend it on an 8800GT, go for it, but there's not much loss in getting a 9600GT and spending the remaining $50 on something else.
