If ATI's offering kicks the 9900's (or whatever the hell NVIDIA's going to call it, I don't care anymore) arse, you might not need SLI.

I can almost guarantee it will (at least in terms of price/performance).  But in terms of raw horsepower, nVidia is probably going to win.

Bump...I guess. Here's my new proposed build for this december (or whenever Nehalem comes out).

Potential upgrade November/Dec. '08:

Nvidia 890i/790i/Intel X58
Nehalem 8 core processor
4 gigs DDR3-1333
2 Western Digital 300 GB Velociraptors
Nvidia 9900 GX2 x2
Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit
Logitech Z-5500 Speakers
CoolerMaster Cosmos S
950w CoolerMaster/Antec PSU

No idea what the next Nvidia chipset will be...890i I presume, but I'm not sure. And if I go with an X58, I won't go SLi as...well, you can't. I think?
Cosmos S = Pure Win.

How much will that rig cost...
Probably like anywhere inbetseen $2,800 and $3,500. I'll be saving up all my money from work for the next few months to save up.

I presume the mobo will be atleast $280..
Processor will be like $350
RAM will at that time be around $150
VelociRaptors will go down as well so probably $275 for each = $550
9900 GX2 will probably be like $525 by then = $1050
Vista Ultimate SP1 will probably go down as well = $250
Z-5500 = $268
Cosmos S = $250
950W PSU = Probably like $250?

So I estimate around $3,500.

There won't be 9900GX2. It is impossible to manufacture with GT200s TDP of 250w.

It will be some sort of crazy ass priced 280 Ultra.  If they cant put two of them on the same chip (like panzer said it just be out of the question), and they feel the need to beat 4870X2 (AND THEY WILL), which is apparantly going to be quicker than a 280 GTX and releases in August.  Like G80 though, I think it be just bragin rights.  If a 280 GTX is as quick as they say (as in ZOMG) and the R700) 4870 X2 beats it, who would spend the money?

On topic, I think end of this year Nehalem rigs are a bit premature though guys, and just a tad shy of not gonna happen (atleast imo).  They dont release to Q4 (which means the last few weeks).  And if we take Penryn as a benchmark, how long did it take for those to filter through?  Released in Q4 2007 but I didnt see them in any great number till easter.

Not to mention the price. I'm just protecting my self by re-using my E6300 on my summer build in the slight chance LGA1366 comes out, isn't extremely expensive and is available. If it is crap, I'll get a Q9450 at that point. (Along with a new mobo/RAM).

I just got total of 190€ already as graduation gifts. (I will hopefully get more soon). And maybe a new phone as well. So my Nehalem build savings are going well.

Nehalem final specs are out
DDR3 1333 for 3.2GHz part

Intel’s higher clocked Bloomfield will work at 3.20GHz. It will come with 6.4 GT/s QDI memory speed and, as we have reported many times before, it will have 8M of total cache.

The CPU has four cores that support eight threads and, to our surprise, Intel officially supports DDR3 1333, whereas any faster memory matched with this new performance king will have to be overclocked in order to make it work.

We also wrote that Nehalem has triple channel memory and that for the best performance you will now need three memory modules, not two as it used to be the case.

The new CPU has 130W TDP which is a bit better than QX9770, the current performance king and the new Bloomfield will work in LGA1366 socket. I am not sure if we need to repeat it, but Nehalem is native quad-core done in 45nm with integrated memory controller, QDI intercommunication interface and eight thread support.

Nehalem comes in Q4 2008.
Nehalem to launch from 2.66 to 3.2GHz
Three-socket 1366 SKUs

The hottest CPU thing this winter will be three Nehalem marchitecture base cores in Tylersburg DT platform. This platform involves one of the three socket 1366 Bloomfield CPUs clocked from 2.66GHz to 3.2GHz and X58-based motherboard.

The Nehalem in the middle will run at 2.93GHz clock and this is just enough to beat 3.0GHz clocked Core 2 Quad 9650. Nehalem architecture is simply more efficient, and let’s hope Intel will have better luck with 45nm native quad-core.

This gives you quite a good impression that Nehalem and X58 will be only for the richest, at least in Q4 2008 launch time, but the prices will go down and eventually Nehalem will get cheaper and affordable through 2008.

Now you know the clocks and in case of emergency, and unlikely even when AMD catches up, Intel can do faster than 3.2GHz clock Nehalem simply to de-thone AMD’s futuristic 45nm quad-core part. This will occur in Q1 2009, if necessary.

The VCore and multi could be wrong though if CPU Z hasn't been updated for them yet.

Nehalem to become Core i7 processor

Intel have decided to brand Nehalem with a new name “Core i7″. That means no matter Bloomfield, Lynnfield, or Havendale will officially get their name.

There will be 3 Bloomfield to enter PC market later this year, and the 999USD top-of-the-line Bloomfield is the only Core i7 Extreme Edition processor current revealed.

All i7 processors and i7 Extreme Edition processor will be officially announced in Aug 11st, launch date set to Q4 this year.

Even though I like AMD over Intel these numbers are hard to ignore.  The fact that Intel is finally releasing a true quad core with hyper threading and a integrated memory control will put AMD way back unless they bring something up front soon.  Intel has come a long way since they first introduced their Core 2 lineup.  I guess this is good for competition but if they keep this up AMD might go out of the CPU market all together.

The integrated controller should make the mobos cheaper but I don't think it will, the CPU just might get more expensive, thats it. And I'm really interested how the CPU will perform as a 4x1 over the current 2x2 quad core setup.

Well you should see a great improvement because you have 4 pipes coming out instead of 2.  They are moving away from 2 cores sharing an L2 cache into 4 cores sharing a L3 cache making for a more efficient CPU on top of the new instruction sets.  Its no wonder the performance is at least 50% greater.

My hopes is AMD will release some X2 phenoms with a high clock speed.  Last I check they will have 512KB L2 cache and 2 or 6mb L3 cache.(Me crosses fingures.)
