I only have one 150 gig raptor in my pc.

I want to record lots of footage for a CSS video.

Would it run fast with an external HD?

I would avoid it at all costs, the disk write time would kill you.

Why not buy the external, and every time you capture video move everything you want to keep onto the external? Especially on CS:S, where you have nice demo files...

Because when I use my raptor to record its too choppy etc.

Can't be my rig.

USB 2.0 interface? Yea, like FM said that might kill ya. Look at an e-sata if possible.

It will run worse, unless you're doing disk transfer on the same disk you're recording fraps to for some reason?

and yeah, it's your rig.

Got e6850, 2 gig ram, XP, and 8800GTS (320 meg)

On CSS, it shouldn't be sluggish = /

At what resolution? That's really what kills performance with fraps.

The max fraps will record is like 11-- x 9--. If you're in-game resolution is higher than that is halves the resolution is records at.

If you want I can compare with you, I have CS:S and a comparable rig. 150gb raptor, e6750, 8800GT, XFX 680i

I find it easier to phrase things like that rather than telling people to look at the back of their TV's to get model numbers..lol .

It runs perfect, but when I turn really suddenly or similar it's like there are lines, and it sort of flickers. Very hard to explain though = /

Graphics drivers updated? FRAPS updated? It sounds like some sort of driver problem.

It is okay when filming now, but when watching, every 2-5 seconds it will pause for a second.

There's very little reason to go USB nowadays when you can use eSATA instead.

a red connector at the back of your mobo for connecting external HDD's.

external sata.  basically a stat port on the I/O part of the mobo with the usb ports, nic, and onboard sound

I fraps everything to a second internal SATA drive. If you want to do it right get a second internal drive; don't try to force the data over your usb bus. And yes you will see a noticeable improvement using a second HD to record to.

Meh I should have read someone mentioned eSata, thats great but I doubt anyones mobo here has it unless they just built their comp

Mine has one on the inside, it's a A8N32-SLI Deluxe.  A standard mobo.....from several years ago.

That's the old fraps. I can record 1280x1024 @ 60fps constant. I'm not sure why your rig can't. I have an E6750 and an 8800GT, fraps writes data to my spare PATA 7200rpm drive.

The fraps file is uncompressed, try compressing before watching to see if it makes a difference.
